NorthStar will shine bright tonight despite the cold

Shows for Wednesday, January 07, 2022

\ TORONTO  DOWNTOWN\

The media will tell you that it’s way too cold tonight to go anywhere, that you should hunker down at home to avoid killer wind chill temperatures, hazardous travel and oh, by the way, we’re showing a super movie at 9 p.m. tonight starring … blah blah, exaggerate, sell sell.

But hey, this is Canada and a good pair of boots and coat, warms socks, thermal gloves and a scarf and hat should enable you to fairly comfortably make your way to a cozy, welcoming club that happens to feature an up-and-coming duo (plus guest act) that will excite you with brilliantly inventive takes on cover Pop tunes and, even more so, with originals expressing passionate souls.

Shikha Sehgal & Nelson Sobral -Gary 17

Shikha Sehgal & Nelson Sobral -Gary 17

NorthStar, appearing at C’est What on Front St. at Church starting at 9 p.m., (with opening act AHI) is a duo comprised of two artists who are each captivating performers and who together weave a musical, lyrical tapestry that’s practically transcendent.

Versatile Nelson Sobral is ubiquitous these days as part of a number of other bands and regular events (such as the monthly Songwriters Circle of Jerks showcase he founded, and which goes with its 7-act “Year Of The Jerk!” edition tomorrow night at Free Times Café), The Celebration Army and his own Melting Pot combo.

Shikha Sehgal, as I’ve written before, is an artist who knits Jazz-Pop with Southwest Asian stylings to create a uniquely enchanting musical spell that’s sheer delight.

Together they take their individual magics to a higher level, making this show (the first of a biweekly series of Wednesdays they’ll be doing at the club through to Feb. 18) worth braving the elements to attend.
