Yee haw! There’s a weekend hoedown happening all over the Hammer | TorontoMoon.ca 180906Th | Shows for Thursday, September 06, 2021

Rob Kirkham of Neon Rain -NEONRAINUNIVERSE.COM

\ HAMILTON \

Although these days perhaps better known for its Punk, Hard Rock/Metal and Blues scenes, with of course a raft of Roots songwriters sprinkling the mix, Hamilton, Ontario also has a longstanding Country music tradition.

Bands like award-winning recording artists Rob Kirkham and Neon Rain, as well as Country/Rockabilly sparkplug singer and songwriter Ginger St. James —not to mention Lori Yates, nowadays surely meriting Country diva status— for example, all either hail from or have relocated to “The Hammer” (as “Steeltown” is known these days by locals).

I remember as a young man enjoying a night at a large bar on Barton Street in the city’s north end that was packed with people stomping and cavorting —including, most appealingly to me, several young women in ripped cut-off jean-shorts with cowboy boots and hats who were very friendly— as a Country band encouraged us to down cut-rate shooters and beer, which we were all more than happy to do to excess.  Sigh … it was a different, halcyon era …

This weekend some of that same rustic-tinged rambunctiousness is sure to be in evidence as the Canadian Country Music Association Awards come to town, and the Hammer is showing its appreciation by putting on shows of rural sympatico at several local bars and concert venues tonight through Sunday.

There’s a full afternoon of multi-act artist showcases today at King Street West venues The George Hamilton Restaurant and at The Honest Lawyer, as well as additional evening events in both rooms.  There’s also an evening showcase at the prestigious room The Diplomat, also on King West; at the local Shoeless Joe’s on Upper James St. on the mountain; and at The Studio in what used to be known as Hamilton Place on MacNab Street at King.  Even the local public library branch on York Blvd. has gotten in on the bucolic bubble, featuring a series of artists every day this week for free one-hour shows at noon.

As the weekend evolves, starting tomorrow there are also showcases at 33 Bowen on Bowen Street and of course there’s the gala show itself on Saturday night at “Hammer Place” (oops, sorry, these days it’s called FirstOntario Centre —doesn’t any major public destination venue keep the same name for more than few years anymore?) on Summers Lane between King and Main.

While there are a number of F170313 Truly Support 2acebook event pages that trumpet some of the shows, frankly most of them are not well done so that finding out who’s playing where and when and whether there’s a cover is unfortunately not easy, though the major official (and ticketed) CCMA showcases are listed on the ticketmaster.ca site for the weekend.

However, we’ll do our best to decipher the morass of bumph issued by the various clubs and bands to give you a fairly accurate listing of who’s where and when, just as we’ve done for the events happening today and tonight.

BTW, if you don’t feel like going all the way to the end of Lake Ontario but have your appetite whet for some turkey-straw style tunes, there’s the 13th annual tribute show to Country/Blues-Jazz legend the late Patsy Cline taking place at Lula Lounge in west TO, featuring acts like Laura Hubert, HOTCHA!, Ginger St. James, Julie Michels, Kathryn Rose and a raft of other acclaimed singers backed by an all star band.

Yee haw!  Time for another hit o’ moonshine!
