Shawn Brush -GARY 17

By Mike Beggs, Special to TorontoMoon.ca

\ BURLINGTON \

Caught up in bureaucracy that doesn’t want to pay for a much needed new wheelchair to help him get out to gigs because “he isn’t due yet” according to their calculations, Blues/Americana Roots artist Shawn Brush will hopefully be able to “keep rolling” after a fundraiser concert by at least a dozen musical friends this afternoon at Boston Manor in Burlington.

As if he needs any introduction to Burlington music fans, Brush is a gifted performer who was born with a rare debilitating condition known as Morquio Syndrome, which weakens bones and tissue and pretty much confines him to a wheelchair.  But that hasn’t stopped him from churning out an impressive 12 indie albums over the years –not to mention writing an autobiography.

Known as “The Krooked Cowboy”, Brush blends Rock, Blues, Folk, Country, and Bluegrass styles –and with a particular penchant for flat-picking.  I’ve never crossed paths with him, but in an online interview (with Barber Shop Podcast) he comes across as well-spoken, humorous, and big-hearted.

Witness the Folk protest song, “The Colour of Steel”.  He was moved to write it after Hamilton’s notorious Stelco plant was purchased by U.S. Steel in 2011, and 900 workers were reported to be on strike outside, when in fact they had been locked out by their new employer!

Running from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., today’s “Keep Shawn Rolling” event in the big room at 4460 Fairview St. (near Appleby Line) will help Brush get his current motorized wheelchair fixed up until such time as he becomes eligible for a new one.

“I can’t begin to imagine his struggles of daily living.  I’m not sure why the government feels the need to make things worse for him,” says Kim McLaughlin, who is helping out with the event.

Brush (joined for a set by Bert Steen and Gary Lucas at 5 p.m.) will be among several cool acts on today’s bill. Others include Sarah Beatty, Ginger St. James, Matty Simpson, McCurlie Doidge & Wiles, Andy Griffiths, Mary O’Malley, Ellis & Transit, Boom Babies, Barn Katz, Duane Rutter and some surprise guests. There’s also raffles and various other ways you can chip in.

Here’s a man who merits support.  So, slap down the $15 cover, and soak up some good music at Boston Manor.
