Walter Trout -PROMO, 2018

Walter Trout -PROMO, 2018

By Mike Beggs, Special to TorontoMoon.ca

\ BRAMPTON \

There’s a theory that the Blues grow on you with age.

Maybe that explains why I found myself buying a Stevie Ray record last week.  Or why I immediately gravitated to the music of American Blues guitar icon Walter Trout, who makes a much-anticipated appearance at Brampton’s Spot 1 tonight.

How gamely Trout and his veteran band tackled a request for Hendrix’ Red House in 2012 on a YouTube video —a song he hadn’t played in years, but dug into with humour, humility, passion, and a prowess developed over the course of five decades.

He definitely does his Strat proud.  But Rock ‘n Roll excesses caught up with this 67-year-old father of three by 2014, when he required a crowd-funded, life-saving liver transplant.

This marks his first Toronto area tour since the illness, and he’s “feeling better than I have in years” he told me, via long distance telephone.

“I was sick for a good 10 years, and I didn’t know it,” he said.

“I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome the whole time.  Then I found out I also had Hep’ C, and it was draining me,”

“(After the transplant), I lost 120 pounds and was in hospital for eight months,” he continued. “I had to relearn how to play.”

He rebounded with the award-winning and critically hailed Battle Scars (2015), and We’re All In This Together (2017).  For that latter release, he had the inspiration of writing a song for and playing alongside 14 different contemporary guitar greats, including Joe Louis Walker, Sonny Landreth, Randy Bachman, and Joe Bonamassa.

“That was really kind of overwhelming, the response I got,” he said. “I just started calling people, and not a one of them said, ‘No.’”

Inspired by axemen like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, and Roy Buchanan, Trout grew up playing the Blues in New Jersey, before splitting for the coast in the early Seventies.

“I went to L.A. and just started going around the clubs and said, ‘Can I sit in?” he related.

He became a sideman for Percy Mayfield, John Lee Hooker, and Lowell Fulson, among others.

He was recruited by Blues/Rock hit-makers Canned Heat in 1981, before moving on to the hallowed John Mayall band by the mid-80’s.  He finally opted to go solo in 1989, signing with a Scandinavian label and building up a following in Europe before North America.

It was a gutsy call, leaving that coveted guitar spot previously filled by Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor.

“After five years with John Mayall, I figured there was nowhere else to go from there.  That’s the pinnacle,” he explained.

Trout’s poised to start work on his 26th album in September.

Blues heads have apparently been snapping up tickets for tonight’s show at $75 apiece.

“There’s people coming from all over,” reports Joe Pinto, manager of the room at at 289 Rutherford Rd. South.

And what can we expect to hear at tonight’s gig, scheduled for a 9 p.m. liftoff?

“Pretty much my own stuff,” Trout told me.

“But I’d have to say, it’s probably a little different every night.  We’ve never written up a set list.”
