‘Alzeimer’ gang will remind us of great times and music tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 170330Th | Shows for Thurs. March 30, 2022

Drew Winters w Lawrie Ingles accompanying, 2015 -GARY 17

\ ETOBICOKE \

A room that doesn’t have a lot of live entertainment other than a weekly Jazz jam Wednesday nights, but that advertises on its website calendar that it is “available for booking” on the nights when there’s no Jazz, comedy or other gatherings, Placebo Space in Etobicoke may find itself in for quite an unusually memorable evening tonight.

I know from first-hand experience that when Bob Segarini, Peter Kashur, Drew Winters and associated veteran partiers from the old school congregate, it’s not just great Pop/Rock music, wisecracks and witticisms that will be flowing freely.

Of course the gang isn’t as spry as it was fifteen years ago when I used to regularly join them for their weekly public “rehearsal” shows of the sadly defunct Cats & Dogs band at an also unfortunately no longer extant downtown bistro hangout known as Miguel’s.

It was during those sessions where I first encountered talents like singer-guitarist Suze Burmester of the Brave & Crazy band and, along with Elana Harte, the BACA acoustic retro-Rock trio.  The talent-laden three-guitars C&D combo also featured Kashur along with the late Rick Gunn on guitar and Karen Bell on backup vocals to Segarini’s consummate front-crooning skills —not to mention his irrepressibly mischievous and entertaining persona.

But wait, there was more!  One of the songwriters for the group was keyboard player and singer Winters, whose smooth, supple and catchy Pop songs with substance should be featured in a textbook on “How to Write a Hit.”  As I’ve written before, I simply do not understand why this man is not touring and selling out rooms like Massey Hall —he’s that good  If you don’t believe me check out his “Second Hand Wings” tune on the Moon’s Featured Tracks page.  And this brilliantly crafted and delivered number isn’t even my favourite Winters composition!

Tonight many of the C&D alumni along with assorted other talents, friends, fans and fun-lovers will meet up as for a show fronted by Robert O’Neill supported by what’s being billed as the Alzeimers [sic] Appreciation Orchestra and Chorus —most of the aforementioned talents.

In addition to being a way-too-overdue reunion of some of these folks, the gathering will no doubt also in part be a bit of a delayed wake for the group’s roadie and chief party support personnel director Dave Bailey, who passed away just before Christmas.

It starts at 8:30 (musicians’ party time, so figure probably 9 or 9:30 before an instrument is actually heard) in the toney but casual room, that’s set up more like an event space than a bar, at 2877 Lake Shore Blvd. West just east of Islington in Etobicoke.
