Glen Hornblast, April 2014 -GARY 17

Glen Hornblast, April 2014 -GARY 17

\TO CENTRAL \

I wondered several weeks ago what had happened to the long-running Words and Music Salon series of eclectic talents when I couldn’t find it listed anywhere during its usual first Saturday of the month while researching that days shows back in June, nor again in July.

I knew that the soirees hosted by poet Linda Stitt for years had moved a couple of times in the past two years, but the event had seemed to have found a natural home at Tranzac Lounge in the Annex area, so I was puzzled as to why it didn’t seem to be happening, and was getting a little concerned.

The mystery seems to be solved now, however, as one of the most frequent guests at the events for the past several years, lyrically strong Glen Hornblast, announced last week that he’s now hosting a show of almost the same name, starting today, with —guess who as one of the guests for the inaugural installment?

Yup, charming, pithy and witty versifier Stitt —whom I first met on the open mic circuit shortly after moving to the city in 1992 just as I was starting up this publication (known initially as The Open Season of course)— will join Glen along with some very other gifted poets and tunesmiths for the rechristened Words & Music Jamboree at Tranzac Lounge starting at 1 p.m.

So obviously Linda has handed hosting duties over to Glen (he’s already announced an August 25 date for the next one) and he is a great choice as the new pivot.  In addition to being a frequent guest at them previously, he’s also been hosting similar affairs for many years now, including his monthly Nashville Bound series at Free Times Café that we’ve written about a few times.

Today’s three-hour kickoff edition of the jamboree will also include Glen’s longtime musical pal Bob Cohen as well as Blues harp dynamo Howard Willett and captivating songwriters Harpin’ Norm Lucien and Lynn Harrison along with spoken word artists Jovan Vuksanovich, John Evans, Stanley Fefferman and Tom Hamilton.

It’s a pay-what-you-can affair in the cozy Southern Cross room of the club at 292 Brunswick Avenue.
