\ TO CENTRAL \

We told you last month about some of the amazing instrumental and composing prowess of multi-dimensional songwriter/musician/artist Mark Sepic when he performed an evening at Relish tapas eatery in east TO.

We mentioned his “Junkestra” project in passing in that article and one of the photos that accompanied it showed him performing on one of his improvised instruments, which he fashions from discarded everyday items ranging from tin cans to plastic jugs, broken hockey sticks and fallen tree branches along with many others.

It was delightful to discover him back in east TO again earlier this month too, when he had been engaged by the East End Arts organization and local councillor Mary Fragedakis to set up a workshop table as one of the artisan displays at the evening mini-festival based around a concert by Julian Taylor at East York Civic Centre.

As usual he delighted the kids by helping to fashion impromptu drums from old tin cans that they could take home with them and by letting them try out some of his instruments such as the “junk harp” he made years ago from part of a broken tree limb.

He’s busier this time of year putting on such workshops and presentations than he is playing guitar.  And when he brings in his full Junkestra rig —as he’s doing this afternoon to wrap a two-day stint on Harbourfront’s Boulevard Patio at 235 Queens Quay downtown— kids not only make and play and discover instruments, they can play in them!

For one of the features of his Junkestra installations is a portable walk-in box somewhat bigger than a closet and containing a vast array of tone-making devices all derived from discarded bits of this and that —including the kitchen sink in one version!  (He has different sizes and configuration of Junkestra installations that he can employ depending on the situation in which he’s being asked to present.)

It’s a brilliant concept that not only fosters development of creativity and thinking both outside and inside the box, but also awareness of ecological principles, since like all of his works, every piece of the constructions are fashioned from “junk”.

It’s been said that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure but seldom if ever before has that concept been illustrated so harmoniously and with such delightful spinoffs as what Sepic will provide from 12:30 this afternoon through till 6:30.  And like the junk he uses to create the experience, it’s all free!
