Fun Comes Fast.  That’s not only the title of Teenage Head’s new remixed and remastered compilation, it’s the reason loyal fans were snapping up tickets for tonight’s show at the famed Horseshoe Tavern –that is, to hear some of the most confectionery Punk-powered songs ever penned by a Canadian band.

Guitarist Gord Lewis, bassist Steve Mahon, lead singer Dave “Rave” Desroches and drummer Gene Champagne (Killjoys) arrive back at the ‘shoe with their newie (on Warner Music Canada) into its third pressing.

Rave admits to some initial reservations about reassuming the helm for this tour and putting some of his own projects on hold.  But in recreating the legacy of the late, legendary Frankie Venom (Frank Kerr) [see obit from to-nite #421, October 16, 2021] he’s been having “Some Kinda Fun.”  The band still kicks, and their fans clearly live to hear these songs in concert.

“We’ve had so many magic nights,” says the Hamilton rocker, known for such bands as The Shakers and Dave Rave Conspiracy.

“We played the Horseshoe last year, and I have to say it reminded me of 1977.”

Tonight’s show will include all the classics —“Let’s Shake,” “Disgusteen,” “Picture My Face,” “Somethin’ On My Mind,” “Top Down” and “Let’s Go To Hawaii” — as well as the new original “Fed Up,” based on a leftover lyric from Venom.

Teenage Head broke out of the gate at full canter in 1979, with their eponymous debut going gold.  They raised the stakes the following year with Frantic City (on Attic Records), and were verging on a U.S. record deal when Lewis was seriously injured in a car crash, stalling their momentum.

Those in the know say that had they been based out of New York or London these boys woulda, coulda been huge.

“Absolutely,” says Gary Pig Gold, publisher of “The Pig Paper, Canada’s first self-published music fanzine and a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer.

“In the summer of ’77 they went down and played CBGB (the famed New York club) and got rave reviews in “Variety” and Britain’s “Melody Maker”. In the audience were people like (Blondie singer) Debbie Harry.”

Rave says Frankie and Gord’s onstage chemistry was so powerful, it could only have been compared to the Glimmer Twins, Mick and Keith of the Stones.  Gold notes the Head (including Rave at the beginning) grew up together as boyhood friends, and when they first hit the Toronto scene after years of rehearsing “already had a good two or three-year jump on all the other bands.”

Their secret weapon was hooky Pop influences like The Monkees and their namesake Flamin’ Groovies, alongside The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Damned plus old-time faves Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and the original Alice Cooper band.

“Another great advantage of Teenage Head was they came from Hamilton, so they weren’t distracted by all the trendy Toronto attitudes,” Gold recalls.

“Like Simply Saucer, they had the distinct advantage of learning their craft, unaffected, in that Hamilton vacuum.”

Forty-three years after they started out, Teenage Head is getting at least some of its due.  They were recently inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2018 Indie Awards at the Phoenix (turning in a live performance), and this summer will become inductees on the Wall of Distinction at their old alma mater, Westdale Secondary School (where Mahon left one credit short of graduating Grade 12, but will be awarded an honorary diploma).

They hit stage around 10:30 tonight at the Horseshoe Tavern, 370 Queen St. W. Doors open at 9, with Rooftop Love Club opening up.  Tickets are $20 per person.
