Willie P Bennett -Willie P Legacy Project

\ PETERBOROUGH \

I remember Willie P. Bennett from my days in London, Ontario, in the mid-through-late 1970s, when I was first learning how to play guitar and write songs and he was already somewhat of a legend in the dynamic arts community by which I was surrounded.

He seemed from a distance a sort of remote and unapproachable icon to me at first, but one day at a gathering of players and tokers I had a chance to chat with him briefly, to play one of my early attempts at a song for him and was surprised and very gratified when he sort of shrugged and said, “you have a lot of learning to do but keep going, I can tell you’ve got something to say.”

He moved out of the city not long afterwards and gradually increased his renown, especially among fellow musicians, and I always gave a silent cheer when he received a laurel or notice over the years thereafter.

Since then, despite his passing at his home in Peterborough twelve years ago this month at the ridiculously young age of 56 (while exercising, fer crying out loud!) his fame and legacy has only grown.

(To me at the time his death barely registered, not because it didn’t bother me but because exactly one week prior, twelve years ago today as it happens, my mother had passed away unexpectedly though peacefully in her sleep the night before a big family reunion at which she would have met her great-grandson for the first time.  So I was still in a tizzy.)

Tom Wilson and the rest of the all-star Blackie and The Rodeo Kings tribute band (their name was the title of one of his songs) have had a lot to do with keeping Willie’s music and memory alive, of course, but his songs have also been covered by performers such as Emmylou Harris and Matt Anderson.

In 2018 concerts were held in several Ontario cities commemorating the raunchy Roots troubadour, including in Hamilton, Guelph, Toronto and London.  Such is the enduring impact he made with his music in his short life.  (You can learn a bit more about that by visiting the Willie P Bennett Legacy page on Facebook.)

And the vibrant Peterborough musical community also has not forgotten one of its iconic early stars.  Ever year since his passing local and other players of note have gathered to perform a concert of his songs.

Dubbed The “Blue Valentine” concerts because of the proximity of his death to the annual celebration of love, this year’s twelfth edition takes place today at The Garnet, which has become one of the main musical rooms in the “Electric City” over the past couple of years.

There is no set cover charge for the 3-6 affair in the room at 231 Hunter St. West, but donations are collected for the Willie P Legacy Project to help keep his memory and music alive.

Talents will include Samantha Martin and Big Sugar, Dave Mowat and Curbside Shuffle, Lindy Vopnfjörd, Buck Tingley, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Geoff Berner and several more.
