Killin’ Time Band -PROMO

By Mike Beggs, for TorontoMoon.ca

\ BURLINGTON \

Given the glut of them out there, it would be tempting to categorize the Killin’ Time Band as just another party cover group. But that would be impossible.

It’s the first time they’ve been featured in these pages, but KTB are no strangers to their hometown paper (The Burlington Post), where readers have voted them Favourite Live Band for the past three years running.

This laid back but subtly hardworking four pull their vintage VW Microbus back into Burlington’s Carrigan Arms tonight.

Singer/guitarist Brad Hails, lead guitarist Ty Price, drummer Paul Dickinson and bassist Brian Bennie stir it up with rachet-tight grooves, while spanning Rawk, Reggae, Funk, Blues, and Country.  They rescue songs that are overplayed (say, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”) and successfully rejig others like Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” which is sped up but retains its heartfelt eeriness, courtesy of Hails’s agreeable rasp (reflecting the influence of masters like Tom Waits, and the late Jerry Garcia).

Even cooler is how they ramp up Tragically Hip’s “Blow At High Dough”  —one of those Canadian classics that’s too often overlooked by the bands, but immediately makes everyone in the audience go  apeshit.  Originals like “Late September” and “Cold Is Creepin’ In” are also up to par.

Hails (whose grandfather was Canadian country icon Gordie Tapp) says he likes working with guys who can play off the cuff and have good ears —and from there, it’s just a matter of having been together for yonks.  Self-proclaimed as “Canada’s Best Party Band,” KTB has punched the time card on over 2,000 gigs since their 2004 formation. They reconfigure the group to suit the venue —be it before 20,000 people at a Ribfest, or 80 at a Britpub, like this venue, which also has a well-entrenched matinee every Saturday AND Sunday, and a menu that ranges from traditional Fish ‘N Chips, to Roaster Wings, to that too-hard-to-find-in-these-parts All Day Breakfast.

It’s an early 8 p.m. start, and it’s Saturday night on a long weekend, so no excuses for not checking them out at 2025 Upper Middle Rd., #23, at Brant St.
