Promo for silent movie soundtrack for ‘The Circus’ show

\ TO CENTRAL \

Winter blahs, January Blues, new decade depression, aging angst, sunless sorrow … there are a lot of reasons why people might be feeling a bit down right now —and I haven’t even included any current events on the list!

If that’s your predicament why not just go join “The Circus” —as in the silent movie by Charlie Chaplin, tonight being given a fresh live musical accompaniment soundtrack by innovative piano/composer genius Ron Davis and percussionist Graham Hargrove at the Jazz Bistro.

For Davis this may seem a somewhat pedestrian assignment, given his history and proclivity for unusual sonic soundscapes, about which I’ve written a few times in the past —most notably when he’s performed with his mind-dizzying SymphRONica Orchestra, such my preview of his 2018 new album release.

But Davis, who is highly regarded overseas as well as by those in the know about innovative Jazz here at home, has also teamed up with other combinations before, as I told you in an article about him incorporating a dance troupe into his show in December of 2018 and as I previewed in November of last year when he paired up with bass player Lauren Falls in a duet.

Tonight’s 8-12 show in the room at 251 Victoria Street downtown will no doubt also be interesting as Davis will be composing an original score to accompany the 1928 film.

It’s worth noting in that respect, too, that his “teammate” tonight, percussionist Hargrove, is a highly regarded accompanist in the Jazz and Classical world who has performed with ensembles and orchestras on four continents as well as recording two albums and being a staple of the local musical theatre scene.

You can expect to pay a $20 cover and I’d wager you’ll feel you got more than your money’s worth for this two-ring film-and-music spectacle that’s bound to include thrills and delights such as you’ve never heard before!
