\ Unlike the event being obsessed over by mainstream media and bars small and large that happen to own a tv, two live music anniversary parties happening tonight are likely to live up to their hype.

But the 6 p.m. telecast of the NFL’s Superbowl will displace live music from bars where it’s normally a fixture on Sunday late-afternoons and evenings. Places such as Mulligan’s in Mississauga, Timothy’s in Etobicoke, The Hideout downtown and Seven 44 uptown are all apparently forgoing live music in hopes that hordes of sports fans will congregate and fill their coffers. (Those fans should be definitely not pick this evening to make an exception to their no-drinking-and-driving rules: Toronto Police, and no doubt other forces, plan to set up RIDE patrols following the game.)

Meanwhile, many rooms will carry on with their live entertainment as scheduled including at Southside Johnny’s, where the jam follows a Superbowl party that should be one of the better ones, with a 40″ tv and Budweiser leather jacket among the giveaway items and a free half-time buffet of the club’s excellent food.

At two other rooms, meanwhile, the “big game” is likely to be an afterthought or sidebar to the real action. At West Shore Bar & Grill in Pickering the Juggernaut Jam Band, fronted by uber-bassist and singer Andy Narsingh, hosts the first anniversary of its very happening 5-9 all ages jam. And at The Supermarket in TO’s Kensington Market area Steve York and Tony Rabalao celebrate eight years of hosting a weekly 7 p.m.-till-late open mic that is generally considered to be in the very top echelon of the many such events taking place anywhere.

{Special note: some clubs have not updated their online calendars and may either have their regular live music events happening or may have a Superbowl party; in such cases I have removed the listings so as to minimize the likelihood of anyone being disappointed.} -Gary 17
