Sam Sundar-Singh & jammer Jennifer Dash at Fox & Fiddle -ALEX MATTHEW on FB

\ TO EAST \

I wrote a couple of years ago about how affable songwriter and Roots/Pop guitarist Sam Sundar-Singh had become a staple as the host of a Monday night “No Band Required” open mic at Grossman’s downtown.

While these days he doesn’t appear to be serving in that capacity quite as often, he’s still got a strong hosting presence on the TO scene with a new weekly Saturday night open stage he’s shepherding in the east end at Fox & Fiddle, 535 Danforth Ave.

From 7-10 (or thereabouts) the stage is open for solo acts or combos of various acoustic styles and a house guitar and keyboard and multiple mics are available to facilitate things.  It’s not a jam exactly, but often groups of players end up trying out different things and with Sam’s versatile participation available to chip in, things never get stale.

The only potential drawback to performing at this event that I can see is that the stage area is set up in front of a big wallscreen television —though at least on some occasions the club has the good sense to turn it off when the live music is taking place.  (It’s not like it’s the only one in the cavernous venue —there’s at least a dozen.)  So if it is on, perhaps try mentioning it to Sam, as I’m sure he’ll be happy to encourage staff to oblige by turning it off and the customer, after all, is always right!
