\ MISSISSAUGA \

Back at Mississauga’s Abbey Road Pub tonight (Friday August 3), the Tone Dogs are Alex Carter (leads vocal, guitar, harmonica), Bob Milne (bass, vocals) and Joe Nufrio (drums, vocals).

Some 20 years in, Carter characterizes them to be “basically an eclectic Blues, Surf, and Vintage Rock band, with a little bit of Country twang.”

Early in the evening choices like “Pretty Woman”, and “Roll Over Beethoven” seemed a little long in the tooth when I saw them several months back.

But this band definitely grows on you with their remarkably pure and faithful renditions of diverse standards like Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago”, The Young Rascals’ “Good Lovin’”, Dwight Yoakam’s “HonyTonk Man”, Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire”, and a Ventures’ medley of Walk Don’t Run”, “Pipeline” and “Apache”.

Then there’s the sked these sixty-some-things keep up – no less than 16 dates in August, with stops like Georgetown, Milton, Bolton, Unionville, Markham, Stouffville, and Peterborough.

“It’s a little bit over the top,” he laughs.  “It keeps it tight, though. And we love playing.”

Tone Dogs will be one of 20-plus bands featured on the street at the annual Southside Shuffle Port Credit Blues & Jazz Festival on September 8 (noon start) —appearing there for a 16th straight year!

As the name suggests, these three are dedicated to the tone and authenticity of their sound. And they get it using gear “that is older than most people who come out to see us.”

Carter decided a long time ago to only use vintage guitars like a custom Fender Strat, and amps from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s (like the Fender Brownface series).

“I don’t use a lot of FX,” he relates. “If you remember the Stones and the Beatles, it was all really clean playing.

“Bob has a bunch of (classic) basses. And Joe has got some great vintage drum kits.”

Raised in Richmond Hill (the home of the Good Brothers and Rush), Carter’s c.v.  dates right back to the Sixties with a band called Mud. He and Milne are long-time musical running mates, who now share Georgetown as their home base. (Nufrio’s in Markham.)

Tonight’s venue has a rich history of its own, actually dating back to the Eighties in its original incarnation as part of the trendy Richard’s “New Wave” dance club complex.  But this room, in the Millway plaza at 3200 Erin Mills Parkway at South Millway north of Dundas St. West, was transformed into an amenable, slightly Beatles-themed pub many years ago now.

And while this trio typically attracts older, like-minded people at the Abbey Road, Carter finds that “a lot of kids that are into Rock ‘N Roll will come out —they’re calling out for Johnny Cash.  I guess they heard it though their parents.”

Tone Dogs kick off the free show at 9 p.m.
