Clela Errington will honestly delight you tonight at Relish

\TORONTO EAST\

With a sweet, warm voice and disposition and a playful glint in her eye and lyrics, yet substance in her soul, Clela Errington is in many ways the very epitome of what we’ve come to think of as a 60’s Folk singer.

Not that she’s old enough to have actually performed Folk music in the 60’s! But her honesty, her unpretentious approach to Folk covers like “May The Circle Be Unbroken” as well as the sincerity and genuine passion of her Roots originals (such as “White Dove” from her recently released fourth album, More Love and Happiness) all together convey a heartfelt integrity of sound and word that is not as common these days as it was during those halcyon days when Roots music was mainstream.

A Gospel-style “going away” song she wrote for a friend who was dying of cancer was so powerful in its authenticity that it was difficult not to shed tears as she delivered it touchingly, accompanied by her daughter Jocelyn Barth, during a previous performance at Relish on Danforth Ave. in East York last month. And on “White Dove” the tapestry of interplay between Clela and Jocelyn’s voices was so beautiful and intricate that it was nearly hallucinogenic.

(That evening also included a guest slot by delightful urban-Country songwriter Kirsten Jones, who these days appears every Thursday evening solo at Richtree Restaurant in TO’s Eaton Centre at 14 Queen St. West. When the three chanteuses sang together on the ‘MTCBU’ finale of the evening, it was heavenly.)

While Clela often appears as a duo with Jocelyn (she also spent a year in 2011 as part of a twosome with Prairie Oyster/Bebop Cowboys drummer John Adames), for her 7:30 – 9:30 show tonight she’ll be accompanied by two male performers: Brian Stillar and Allan Soberman (who’s half of the psychedelic Roots duo The Groovees).

There’s no cover for the show in the funky tapas bar at 2152 Danforth Ave., a block east of Woodbine, but there is a tip jar and of course Clela will have her recorded material available.
