Gotta love Broadview and Danforth on a Monday night

\ TORONTO EAST \

Between the presence of The Danforth Music Hall and several clubs that feature live music regularly, seeing musicians carrying instrument is no biggie to the residents of the area around Broadview and Danforth Ave.s on a weekend night. But Mondays, too, can practically be a traffic jam with the number of players visiting two open stages and participating in a third showcase event all within a literal stone’s throw of one another. (Please, don’t test this assertion!)

Tonight the weekly 7-11ish M-Factor Mondays showcase night at The Old Nick (121 Danforth Ave.) celebrates its fourth year anniversary of holding the event and host Elana Harte promises, in addition to a feature set by Hippie Chic, an “all-request set” that presumably she’ll do accompanied by some of the regulars.

About as far to the east of that as the traces of a joint’s puff can travel without dispersion, Dora Keogh at 141 Danforth Ave. once again features Dora’s Explorers as the feature act for Julian Taylor’s 8-12 open stage at the club. While it seems the lively, amorphous combo, which includes Julian, has been the feature act at the event a lot lately, the upside of their ongoing presence is that it means a drum kit, keyboard and multiple mics are set up, setting the cozy stage nicely for some of the impromptu all-star jamming for which this evening is well known.

When those shows have wrapped by the time Tuesday morning officially begins, things are usually just heating up across the street at Black Swan Tavern, where iconic protest songwriter, Country/Rock guitar god and always unpredictable and entertaining host Sebastian Agnello has been holding a weekly open stage on the ground floor of the venue at 154 Danforth Ave. for over three years now. The talent mix is eclectic, ranging from tender young newbies to grizzled veterans and including dollops of Country, Rock, Pop, indie and selections, between the guest sets, of Seb’s eclectic and always pithy originals and covers of songwriters of intellect.

Expect a few John Lennon songs at any or all of these events tonight.
