Amsterdam a designated Friendzone tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 170727Th | Shows for Thursday, July 27, 2021

Jody Ferrer -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

Everyone knows that anything to do with Amsterdam is likely to put a smile on your face, whether it’s the relaxed city with permissive mores itself (the original go-ahead-and-smoke-it and go-ahead-and-sell-yourself destination for North Americans and Europeans seeking a good time), the delightful line of beers from the local brewery or the music and food venue at 54 The Esplanade known as The Amsterdam Bicycle Club.

It should be the ideal location for a quirky songwriter with brilliant if sometimes embarrassingly cheeky yet also piercing insights and a gift for rhyme.  And Jody Ferrer, who appears there tonight at 10 for a no-cover show with his band The Friendzone, fits that bill to a T.

As we’ve told you a few times, most recently earlier this year after release of his album, Nothing Sexy, Ferrer’s versatile musicality combined with those oh-so clever and fearless lyrics puts the alt back in alt-Pop.  So much so that some venues have had an issue with even allowing him to play at their open mics —to their everlasting discredit.

One would hope that even with songs like “Hispsters Suck” in his repertoire —not to mention the eponymous “Stuck In The Friendzone” with its explicit references to masturbation and the pursuit of getting laid— this downtown club, which has been a big supporter of showcasing indie music acts, will be sophisticated enough to live up to the tolerant disposition of its namesake municipality and not only not cut short his gig, but celebrate and enjoy it the way we do.
