Beaches Jazz Festival action heating up | TorontoMoon.ca 160716Sa | Shows for Saturday, July 16, 2021

\ TO EAST \

This year’s edition of the Beaches Jazz Festival (now in its 28th year) is actually just about two thirds over, having staged a variety of concerts in widespread east Toronto locations, including farmers markets and community parks, over the past two weeks, but the big shows are just starting to roll out.

This weekend at Woodbine Park on Lake Shore Blvd. at Coxwell Ave., there are, in addition to some shows yesterday evening, two full days of live shows on two stages featuring a variety of acts that aren’t all strictly Jazz, if you’re a purist, but that are most assuredly of high quality.  And the shows are all free.

Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar -promo

Today’s roster includes, for example, exciting up-and-coming Blues combo Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar, which, as we told you back in January, was nominated for four awards at this year’s Maple Blues Awards.  While the group didn’t score any hardware, just being nominated, as they say, is an honour —especially for an artist who actually started out as a Country/Rockabilly act, with her longtime band The Haggard, and has only really been doing Blues for about three years now.

The band appears at 5:30 p.m. on the TD Main Stage.  Another Blues act of note that’s on that stage this weekend is legendary Rockabilly outfit the Paul James Band, which performs at 4:30 tomorrow.

On the SING! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival-sponsored A Cappella stage, the 14-member Countermeasure band, which just released its second album, Made To Measure at a gala concert at Harbourfront Centre two days ago, shares some of their critically acclaimed originals and eclectic covers starting at 3 p.m.

TV/radio host George Stroumboulopoulos calls the group, led by award-winning composer/arranger Aaron Jensen, “awesome” and it was one of only a few local acts that was part of this year’s extended 12-day SING vocal festival in May.  Incorporating percussive and instrument-like vocal sounds along with intricate, stirring and delightful harmonies, the group has been called “the leading a cappella chorus out of Toronto,” by the Washington D.C. Examiner newspaper, among many other media plaudits.

It’s probably worth arriving at this stage a little earlier actually, since Countermeasure is preceded by another vocal Jazz sensation, The Ault Sisters, who go on at 2.

The festival continues later in the week with more concerts at the park Tuesday and Wednesday and all next weekend from Friday through Sunday, along with the famed Streetfest that closes off Queen Street East for three days of outdoor shows from July 21-23.

For more info check out the festival website’s schedule page, pick up a copy of the hard-copy programme from several area retail and restaurant locations or check the TorontoMoon.ca listings daily.
