Musical friends of the late Charlie Spencer celebrate his life tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 160428Th | Shows for Thurs., April 28, 2022

\ TO ETOBICOKE \

I didn’t know booking agent Charlie Spencer but a whole lot musicians from all over the place did and were very shocked and saddened by his unexpected passing in January.  Tonight many of them will gather to jam some tunes and share memories of the affable, helpful fellow at a show at The Rockpile in Etobicoke.

Although he was apparently better known in the Whitby area, his sister, Mary-Lou Spencer, said in a posting on the Facebook event page for tonight’s show that although when he first passed the hope was to hold a memorial event in the Whitby area, closer to where the siblings grew up, “shortly after the shock of his passing set in, my/his family (our mother and Charlie’s wife) decided that going through a service would just be too difficult to endure. Therefore, the memorial concert at The Rockpile on April 28th will be the only celebration to take place.”

Musician Baz Littlerock posted on the event page that “Charlie was one of a kind. A true friend he always put you first. I miss him every day.  His laugh was so great you’d try to make him laugh more just to hear it. I went for lunch with Charlie just before he passed and we sat there for almost 3 hours discussing nothing but everything. Never a boring conversation.”

Another musician wrote: “I never met Charlie in person but I spoke to him about 5 or 6 times on the phone … and he was excited about being an agent for my band. I can say that Charlie was always a good soul and I could sense it as we talked … plus my drummer met him a few times and told me how gracious and kind he was and how impressed he was with him as a person.”

Others echoed sentiments about how he exhibited a genuine, caring nature that few would normally associate with a book agent and that made him a friend and kind of coach as much as a business associate.

Tonight’s event will be hosted by The Dukes and several musicians have already confirmed they’ll be participating, including Al Reilly, Max Brand, Baz Littlerock, James Alcock, Mena Hardy, Carmen Toth and many others.

Bands that want to take part in should simply show up with their instruments but there will be a drum kit on stage and some amps to use. Doors open at 7 in the room at 5555 Dundas St. W., with the show starting at 7:30 or 8 and scheduled to end at about 11 p.m.  There is no cover charge.
