Can showing some love at Afrofest help to heal? | TorontoMoon.ca 160709Sa | Shows for Saturday, July 09, 2021

\ TO EAST \

Can we do anything usefully productive and healing to change the social mindset in the wake of recent incidents south of the border —and those closer to home, including last week’s disruption of the PRIDE parade by Black Lives Matter and the reactions to it?  Or are we condemned to simply watch as anger fuels more anger, violence begets more violence, police shootings produce shootings of police and the whole damned continent degenerates into civil war?

Maybe yes or maybe no;  but it behooves us, if we care even a wit about the world our children and grandchildren will inhabit —assuming Donald Trump isn’t elected and there still is an inhabitable world in another generation— to at least try.

One thing that is nearly certain is that it won’t solve anything to continue pointing fingers, telling people their opinion and experiences don’t matter and dividing the world into “us” and “them” camps.

It’s easy enough to understand why people tend to devolve into an adversarial mentality.  After all, the current structure of our economy —which depends on there being a lot more losers than winners, and which has become distorted way out of proportion to any rational conception of such a division (even if you believe that such a system is not pathologically self-destructive)— tends to readily create classes of those with privileges and those who can’t afford them.

While perhaps only a severe social shakeup —which inevitably will involve serious dislocations impacting a lot of innocent people— can ultimately solve that underlying problem, it shouldn’t have to meant that on a personal, individual level we degenerate into mindless hating machines incapable of seeing as real and valid those who are different from us or who disagree with us.

The way to prevent that, it seems to me, is not by reading or politicking or even through thinking, necessarily, but simply to actually spend positive time with a wide variety of people —including and especially those with different backgrounds from our own— so that they do become real to us, making stereotyping far less likely.  And nothing lubricates such experiences like music.

There’ll be plenty of that happening today and tomorrow at the 2016 edition of Afrofest, a joyous celebration of cultures and peoples and the foods, fashions, customs and music of Africa, which of course is itself an extremely diverse portion of the planet.

It’s free, it takes place in an easily accessible location (at Woodbine Park, at the foot of Coxwell Ave. between Kingston Rd./Eastern Avenue and Lake Shore Blvd. East) and I can tell you from personal experience that it’s a very opening, inviting affair.

Although the event’s website did not seem to be functioning at press time, we found the full entertainment schedule on a Facebook page, which also contains lots of other info about the celebration, and the musical lineup appears below.
