Rory Cummings [centre] and his One Shot Band at Relish -GARY 17

They say home is where the heart is and for performers that usually means a stage in a room in which they’re appreciated and that as a result is pretty much full for their show.  That should be the case tonight for a couple of groups that appear in clubs where they’ve developed affiliations of long standing with the audiences.

In East TO, Rory Cummings and various incarnations of his vocally rich Country/Pop One Shot Band, as well as his eponymous combos, have been fairly regular features at Relish in east TO over the past few years. They have gigs there every few months, pretty much always packing the cozy tapas restaurant at 2152 Danforth Ave. a block east of Woodbine.

But given that the members of the full 5-piece edition of the group are no longer spring chickens, it’s unusual that he can assemble the full flotilla of talents on a given night.  So that should make this evening’s 7-9 no-cover appearance by the quintet also double as a kind of seasonal holiday party (even though Rory promises “no Christmas songs!”) for the group and its longtime fans.  Many also remember the Country band Redhill Road, which several of the OSB members were also in and that, as we’ve told you previously, performed for many years on the bar circuit and has released several albums including many catchy, ear-worm quality originals.

Susie Grooves at Southside jam -GARY 17

Susie Grooves at Southside jam -GARY 17

Out in Etobicoke meanwhile, although singer and guitarist Susie Grooves is making her official debut as a headliner at Southside Johnny’s at 3653 Lake Shore Blvd. near Brown’s Line, her talents will be familiar to many of the regulars who enjoy an eclectic mix of Rock, Blues and Country-Pop acts in the room four nights and Saturday afternoons every week.

She’s been a fixture of the Sunday night jams on the club’s raised, spotlighted stage for several years —in fact that was how I first met her some years ago when she was sitting in for a set with the house band led by Rebecca Matiesen.

Susie’s 10-2 appearance as the feature act tonight with her fairly new Pop Rock outfit, Susie Grooves & Co. —which has been getting gigs in rooms across the 905 area the past few months— will therefore be a bit like a homecoming show for her.  There’s never a cover at Southside and I can highly recommend the food from personal experience, while the vibe is always fun and the service first-rate.
