Artists shining brief but bright at Sunday Roots showcases | TorontoMoon.ca 151122Su Shows for Sun., Nov. 22, 2015

\ TO DOWNTOWN \

Shows featuring multiple artists seem to have really proliferated over the past few years, allowing a lot of talents who may not have enough material to fill an entire four hours or so to still have an opportunity to shine in the spotlight.

This afternoon and early evening at Tranzac Lounge in TO’s Annex area, award-winning Folk songwriter Michael Laderoute is featured 3-5 accompanied by guitar wiz Rob Fenton. Right after that show, wry and witty Roots-Pop songwriter Peter Mathieson joins uber-versatile Steve-Paul Simms and Folkie Joanne Crabtree for a 5-7 showcase.

Following that gathering, at nearby Free Times Café on College St. near Augusta, a group of hugely talented songwriters gather for the latest edition of Glen Hornblast’s Nashville Bound series, which tonight is also a preview of the upcoming 14th edition of the Winterfolk Blues & Roots Festival in February.

An event that itself has done more than any other I can think of to lift the profiles and advance the careers of Roots artists since its inception in 2002, Winterfolk is the epitome of events that allow talents to show what they can do in short-burst sets staged at several venues over a weekend in the middle of winter.

HOTCHA! -Gary 17

Along with scores of others artists, the 2016 edition will include performances by the artists who will be appearing tonight at the 7 p.m. Free Times show, for which proceeds from the $10 or pay-what-you-can cover all go to the non-profit festival.

In addition to host Hornblast, the night includes founder and executive director and “psychedelic Pholk” artist Brian Gladstone teamed up with musical partner, songwriter and Juno-winner Tony Quarrington, HOTCHA! Swing-Roots duo featuring Beverly Kreller; Roots-Pop tunesmith (with a new album recently released) David Storey plus D’arcy Wickham, Mr. Rick, Clela Errington and Noah Zacharin.

Though the weather is finally showing signs of starting to get colder and the nights are longer, the brief bursts of musical light coming from the many short sets by all these delightful artists today and tonight can serve to remind us that this also means the festive season is now underway!
