Hitting the teen years, Particelli’s Girls Night Out isn’t so predictable | TorontoMoon.ca 180124We | Shows for Wed. Jan. 24, 2018

Peter Hill & Lisa Particelli @ Morgan’s -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

I knew that the popular weekly Jazz singer jam hosted by Lisa Particelli had recently hit the 13-year mark so found myself rather befuddled when I noticed last week that for the balance of the month it seemed to be missing from the weekly calendars published by 120 Diner, where, as we told you when it moved, it has been held for the past couple of years after, as we also told you prior to that, seven years at Chalkers Pub and four previously elsewhere.

I was just getting ready, in fact, to shoot off an email to piano man Peter Hill, who’s part of the anchoring band that accompanies Particelli for the shows (and a longtime Toronto Moon/to-nite subscriber and advertiser) to find out what had happened, when, lo and behold, I came across an event on Facebook that explained all.

It seems that now that it’s a teenager you maybe shouldn’t expect this jam to follow all the old familiar patterns!  Because for the next five weeks, starting tonight, the event moves over and up to Jazz Bistro at 251 Victoria Street, one of the city’s longest running venues catering exclusively to that genre (nearly 30 years, having started out life as Top O’ The Senator in 1990) and as close as you’ll find on The Big Smoke scene to a pre-eminent jive joint crib for the cool grooves cats and chickadees.

In addition to the geographical change, the next five weeks will be a little different stylistically too, since instead of three backing players Lisa will rely solely on Hill —and any instrument-toting guests who happen along— for the accompaniment.  However, based on my experience checking out the monthly last-Sunday edition of the event that Particelli does these days at Morgans on Danforth in TO East (also in a duo mode) finding ready volunteers to chip in musically shouldn’t be a problem.

During my visit to Morgan’s for about a third of the show in October, not only was the packed house treated to several singers such as Laura Marks, Marla Lukovsky, John Alcorn, Elana Welston and Sam Broverman, there were a couple of sax players joining in at various points —and of course Lisa also did a couple of numbers featuring her vocals and flute.

This special celebratory series will also, in the second set, be featuring tunes by a different acclaimed composer each week, starting tonight with numbers by Harold Arlen, the composer of the music from everyone’s favourite movie, “The Wizard of Oz” along with enduring chestnuts like “Paper Moon,” “That Old Black Magic,” “I Love A Parade” and “One For My Baby”.

As always singers and players are welcome to participate and will be treated graciously as they enjoy performing on a stage that has featured many legends over the decades.  And in keeping with the participatory spirit of the jam, the toney room at 251 Victoria Street is foregoing the usual steepish cover charges, levying only a token $5 “music charge” for attending.
