Soul Mates band collage -COURTESY

\ TO CENTRAL UPTOWN \

In the realm of the spirit and soul, as in the domain of our dreams, time is of no consequence and we are all ageless.  Yet in the corporeal realm, while we’re all subject to the ravages of time, nothing keeps us going more effectively than having a vibrant dream and/or an effervescent soul.

Perhaps that helps to explain how singer Sue Martin and guitarist Dave Girdlestone each seem to be somewhat impervious to the calendar’s tick as they continue, about a quarter-century after I first heard either perform, to deliver high-energy, captivating live musical performances.

These days the two veterans are teamed up as part of an appropriately named band, Soul Mates (though they’re not mates, just musical pals) that is Martin’s newest incarnation based around some core members of her former Whatever Sticks outfit, as I mentioned in a previous article when the new band debuted just under two years ago, since which time Dave joined the crew.

excerpt from to-nite #071, Page 27, . Kime 1. 1996 featuring Sue Martin

What I only realized a few months ago, however, while doing research on another topic as I trolled through old copies of my to-nite magazine from the mid 90s, was how long I’d actually been writing about Sue!

In June of 1996, which she says “seems like 50 lifetimes ago!” I published a little “hot box” featurette about her and the band she was fronting then, called Sam and the Republic, for their appearance at a cozy little uptown joint called Kokomo (where I also around the same time first heard Julian Taylor perform —when he was still too young to be in bars legally).

As for Girdlestone, he’s been a monster player on the west GTA scene since before I first started covering that area a little over 20 years ago and these days is also part of a couple of other very active and dynamic bands: the Soul Funkshun big band Soul/R&B outfit and The Collective combo with veteran frontman Donnie Meeker, which just last week wrapped up its first season of Sunday afternoon shows at Dakota’s Sports Lounge in Etobicoke.

With these two still dynamic performers anchoring the Mates —which also includes longtime Martin musical sidekick Jy Fairlie on guitar and vocals, Randy Moreland on bass and Gerry Fielding on drums, with veteran sax man Larry Bodnar also part of the mix depending on the gig— you know you can count on an exciting and professionally delivered performance all evening long.

I’d expect the full edition of the band to be out for their show tonight, when Martin returns to the uptown area to the former Chick ‘n’ Deli room at 744 Mount Pleasant Ave. with which she’s well familiar, nowadays known as The Mount Pleasant Rose and still equipped with an impressive, raised stage set-up that makes it possible for a band to put on a real show.

There’s a cover at this club weekend nights, though the room’s website doesn’t indicate how much this evening’s might be for this show that starts at 9 p.m.
