\ HAMILTON \

While many in the Roots, Blues, Jazz and Pop community in Toronto are busy bemoaning the sudden closure of Hugh’s Room last week, leaving many artists and advance ticket purchasers out of pocket, a panoply of Blues stars are gathering in Hamilton this evening to raise money to help a newish dinner-and-music room become better established there.

It doesn’t get much more star-studded than the lineup that will appear from 7 p.m. at the Casbah Lounge at 306 King St. W. a few blocks west of the Jackson Square Mall in the heart of the Steel City.  In case you didn’t already know, “The Hammer” actually has a Blues scene as vibrant as that in TO —more so, even, considering the relative sizes of the two municipalities.

Resident talents such as Steve Marriner, Steve Strongman, Alfie Smith, Frank Koren and Frank Cosentino will all appear along with festival stalwarts from TO and area such as Chuck Jackson, Alec Fraser and Jerome Godboo for the “Blues For Booze” fundraiser, for which suggested donation-cover is $25.

It’s all in aid of enabling Connie Rouble, the owner of nearby eatery Mississippi Queen Foods, to apply for a liquor license in order to evolve that room into “a destination ‘Blues supper club’ here in Hamilton” as the Casbah’s website puts it.  Sounds a lot like what Hugh’s Room was trying to be except narrower in focus!

In addition to the stellar live music tonight there’ll be raffles, a silent auction and door prizes as well as a “Blues Gumbo” buffet available for $20 prepared by the beneficiary of the affair, so that you can sample what’s on offer in her place at 635 King St. East on the other side of downtown.

The restaurant, which opened a year ago almost to the day (on Jan. 06, 2016) already stages occasional “Southern Supper” live music events with marquee-draw talents (including two later this month) despite the challenge of doing so without being able to serve alcohol.
