Julian Taylor Band at a Canada Day show in 2016, -JENNIFER WILSON

\ TO CENTRAL \

These days, it seems, it’s always a special occasion when versatile Funk/Pop/Dance/Roots songwriter Julian Taylor performs with his full band at a venue in his hometown.  He is in so much demand as a solo/band act across the province and beyond, and so busy writing new songs, that it’s becoming almost rare to see him on a TO stage.

As we predicted years ago, his star has continued to rise with the release of a series of albums that demonstrate both his musical command of eclectic genres and the soulful passion and thoughtfulness that have always characterized both his lyrics and person.

The ascendancy (actually reascendancy, as we explain below) began with 2014’s impressive Tech Noir album that we  reviewed at the time, continuing through his brilliant double-disc release Desert Star in 2016 that we described then, and snowballing, so to speak, with his most recent release Avalanche.  Though longtime fans will also recall 2009’s Blank Tape Levy as a wonderful harbinger of the great stuff to come.

Playing a Christmas show at Horseshoe Tavern with his band du jour has become a sort of tradition for Julian, dating back to his early millennium days with Staggered Crossing (aka StagX to fans) when he made his first forays onto the charts with a number of Pop hits.  For several years after its 2007 breakup, that band reunited for the Christmas shows, which have always jammed the big room.

These are also now sort of anniversary shows for his eponymous Julian Taylor Band configuration, which, Julian relates, “essentially formed in December 2010 on Boxing Day” as a Motown covers trio, morphing gradually since then into the full blown hit-making machine it is today, travelling, btw, to do shows in London and Owen Sound this weekend before taking a holiday break.

Julian will also be familiar to many readers as the long-time (ten years!) host of a weekly open stage at Dora Keogh, as we celebrated in 2015, but which he had to give up in late 2017 to focus, understandably, on promoting and adding to his growing catalogue of popular tunes, many of which are getting national airplay and some of which have been used in tv shows.

(Longtime readers, however, will recall reading about Julian even before that, in my old to-nite magazine as long ago as the early 1990s, when, as I outlined last year in an obit for his pal and supporter Doug Montgomery, he was still underage for being in bars but had already begun to make his mark on the midtown music scene with performance of his acoustic ballads at local open stages.)

Tonight JT —as he’s nearly universally known by pals and fans— and the boys once again take to the big stage at the ‘shoe, at 370 Queen St. West at Spadina Ave.  They’ll be joined by opening act Tanika Charles, who kicks things off at 8.  Cover is $17.50 at the door.
