Musical gathering to serve Clinton’s bar staff tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 200225Tu | Shows for Tuesday, February 25, 2022

Clinton’s Tavern -GOOGLE STREET VIEWS

\ TO CENTRAL \

The abrupt closure a few days ago of Clinton’s Tavern, a home to live music and dance parties for the past nine decades, has not only left the musical performance community distressed but also, of course, has profoundly affected the staff.

It tweaked some nostalgic memories in me as in 1989 I held an edition of my annual SpringRise Concert series there and was very pleased by both the way the club treated me and the amazing job done by then-soundman, now legendary icon in the business Bo (he went on to train a generation of knobs and dials spinners still working in top local clubs).

Whether the room at Clinton St. and Bloor can reopen as a tavern soon or even at all is till up in the air.  But either way, the staff are out of work and out of pocket for the time being and, as everyone in the biz knows, being a bar employee is a tenuous way to make a living at the best of times.

Tonight therefor a group of musicians led by venerable Bill Withers and his Choir Choir Choir ensemble that has gathered there weekly for years, will come together for an impromptu “Lean On Me” benefit for the affected staff.

Being held at nearby Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor Street just east of Bathust), I’d expect there’ll be a lot of Clinton’s regulars coming and that anyone would likely be welcome to perform.  Cover for the 7 p.m. event is a $10 donation to the cause.
