Tommy Rocker -GARY 17

Tommy Rocker -GARY 17

UPDATE at Fri. March 10, 9:30pm: As if to prove the point being emphasized in this article, the club mentioned in it, at which Tommy Rocker’s Band was scheduled to play tonight, decided last night to cancel the gig in favour of bringing them in next Friday for St. Patrick’s Day.  So, as Tommy only discovered today, the gig is off.  Like they just realized yesterday that next week is March 17?  Pathetic is too kind of a description for a scene on which this is considered ok behaviour.  Talk about normalizing sociopathology!

\ SCARBOROUGH \

Frankly the Scarborough club scene these days is pathetic, in particular the complete lack of any promotion effort by most clubs that do feature live music.

Rooms like McGradie’s, Smiling Jack’s, Karla’s Roadhouse, Tara Inn, The Birchmount and others that normally have live bands on Friday nights either don’t have websites or even social media accounts or don’t bother to update them with live music listings if they do.

That’s not only a disservice to themselves and patrons who might want to see the groups they’ve booked in the expectation of drawing some bodies to the room, it’s also hugely disrespectful of the artists involved, who are expected to do all the promotion on top of working what amounts to a full day of labour for peanuts.

What is wrong with the knuckleheads who run these rooms?  Are they serious about being in the hospitality industry or is there another agenda at work?  Whatever the cause, they should be ashamed of themselves and patrons should tell them off about it..

Fortunately, some of the players at least do have their shit together enough to let people know when and where they’re appearing.  Al Reilly and his Catalyst band are always on top of their game, for example, and so is Tommy Rocker, who tonight brings his Classic Rock Show into West Hill Pizza, a room at 4379 Kingston Rd. where, a little bird tells us, he’ll be likely spending a lot more time in the near future.

We’ll look forward to telling you more about that soon!
