Groovestone just what Johnny needs for his Southside birthday tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 180120Sa | Shows for Saturday, January 20, 2022

Groovestone -FACEBOOK

\ ETOBICOKE \

It hasn’t been a great week for Southside Johnny’s owner John Theodore.  But that could all change tonight when he celebrates his birthday with one of the GTA’s most exciting bands that he’s been hoping to get on his very nicely geared-out stage for some time now.

The club re-opened last night after being closed for what was supposed to be one week for some enhancing renovations (new carpet, benches, lighting and more) but what dragged on to be closer to two weeks due to contractor fuckups.  By the time the room opened a little before 8 p.m. last night (with all the renos still not done —work will continue after closing for the next little while) John was near the end of his rope.

But tonight could change all that, when super-group Groovestone finally hits the stage at 10 p.m. in the room at 3653 Lake Shore Blvd. W., a block west of Brown’s Line in Etobicoke’s Long Branch area.  As always there’s no cover and the party is being cast as a Hawaiian themed event, with giveaways for people wearing Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts.  When John has a birthday, it’s him who hands out the gifts!

The band that will anchor all this has been attracting raves from all across the GTA for the past couple of years now.  For more about them, check out the article below written by Mississauga music write Mike Beggs, who often drops in to see the band at its weekly shows at nearby Timothy’s Pub on Brown’s Line.

By Mike Beggs, special to TorontoMoon.ca

Like their web site says, they just may be, “Toronto’s Best.”

I challenge you to roll out to tonight at Southside Johnny’s or to Timothy’s Pub at 344 Browns Line for Groovestone’s weekly Tuesday night gig and prove differently.  Because for the past year-and- a-half, this covers supergroup has had west GTA fans in the know heading religiously to these shows.

It’s always good when these guys slack and joke between songs.  But then they strike up, and consistently kill it.  Lead singer/guitarist Kevin Reid, bassist/vocalist Stan Miczek, guitarist/vocalist Rickferd Van Dyk, and drummer Dean Glover have worked with Canadian and international recording artists like the Guess Who, Kim Mitchell, Teenage Head, Jeff Healey, Sass Jordan, Nelly Furtado, and the Headstones, to name a few.

Groovestone’s failsafe algorithm entails picking “B-sidey songs”, and then applying loud guitars, hand-in-glove rhythms and professional grade three and four-part harmonies.

The magnetic Reid comes off performing for years with the Black Crowes tribute, Remedy.  He also plays every Wednesday with his way-soulful Kevin & The Dedbeats at Roc‘n Doc’s, 105 Lakeshore Rd. E. in Port Credit, and fronts the hillbilly-flavoured Bon Jovi tribute Band Jovi.

Witness the testosterone edge they give to Split Enz’ “I Got You”, or the sheer soul power on the Player nugget “She’s Gone”.  And when did anybody ever tackle Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”, or Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” in a bar?
