Lots of gold to be found in Tin Pan showcases despite deficient promo | TorontoMoon.ca 180524Th | Shows for Thursday, May 24, 2022

David Bradstreet at Winterfolk, 2013 -Gary 17

David Bradstreet at Winterfolk, 2013 -Gary 17

Once again the “Tin Pan North” songwriters showcases are being put on by the Nashville Songwriters Association International apparently over three nights in at least four locations.

(I say “apparently” three nights and “at least” two locations because once again the idiot who handle so-called “promotions” for the organization didn’t bother to send TorontoMoon.ca a press release about the events, nor bother to get listed in NOW Magazine, nor, so far as I’ve been able to discover, create Facebook events for any of the shows despite an amazingly talented lineup.  The only information we have comes from artists who’ve shared lineup nights, websites of some of the participating rooms and a couple of Facebook events created by artists involved in the affair.)

Regardless of the abysmal incompetence of the promotion end of the organization, whoever is booking the talent certainly does know their stuff as there’s an incredible array of Roots and Country oriented singer-songwriters performing in the in-the-round format over two nights of club shows and, of course, at the gala finale at Hugh’s Room Live on Saturday night.

Some of the standout talents are on stage tonight, in particular at Cadillac Lounge in TO (1295 Queen St. W.) where David McLachlan teams up with the Folk icon who produced his debut album many years ago now, David Bradstreet, and two other artists for the second 9:30 set of the 7:30-11:30 event.  [See our listings for full details.]  The early set is no slouch either, as Roots veteran Howard Gladstone teams up with engaging balladeer Harpin’ Norm Lucien, acclaimed Blues/Jazz composer Chris Whiteley and Hana Bajric.

In Oakville at 137 Kerr St., Moonshine Café has an impressive roster tonight as well with delightful authentic Roots-Pop songwriter Mark Yan and looping Jazz innovator Ambre McLean among the four participants in the early set.  There’s also a show in Mississauga at Cities Sports Bar at 5835 Dixie Road.  Cover is just $10 for each of these shows.

All three of these rooms also hold shows tomorrow night, with highlights including Caitlan Hanford and David Leask both at Moonshine, Glen Hornblast  at Cadillac and Tin Pan founder (and still, I believe, main man) Dan McVeigh on the bill at Cities.  The Saturday gala at Hugh’s (for which cover will be $20) includes Danny Marks, Suzie Vinnick, Blair Packham and three more.

Whether you’ve heard of all of the artists or only some (Moon readers will be well familiar with those who are subscribers and those names are underlined as well as some of the others mentioned whom we’ve written about before) or even none of the artists, you can be guaranteed that any of these shows will amply repay the time and expense of attending with some stellar, unforgettable live music.  Too bad the organizers are so lame about getting the word out —they do a disservice not just to themselves and the participating artists and rooms, but to fans as well.
