Peter Hill -Gary 17

Peter Hill -Gary 17

\ TO WEST \

As I’ve recounted on a few occasions now, piano player Peter Hill is among the most versatile and ubiquitous ivories plunkers you’ll find on the GTA music scene, accompanying A-list Jazz, Swing, Blues, and even Country/Honky Tonk performers several nights a week.  He’s also a pretty fine instrumental Jazz composer, even if that aspect of his career has been somewhat eclipsed by his busy schedule.

He’s been the musical core of Laura Hubert’s band for over 17 years; does weekly appearances as part of the house band for Lisa Particelli’s Girls Night Out singers Jazz jam (now Wednesdays at 120 Bistro) for over a decade; is a longtime member of Alex Pangman’s Alleycats Swing-Jazz band; and is also part of original Honky Tonk group Colonel Tom & The American Pour —not to mention regularly backing a variety of top Jazz or Blues singers for one-off gigs.

Hill does also still perform some of the excellent originals from his 2009 debut —and so far only— album, For Now when doing occasional but regular appearances at The Rex with his own quintet, as in fact he’ll be doing the next two Mondays 6:30-9.

But now, starting tonight, he’s emerging in yet another incarnation: as the weekly host of an interesting Duos Night show of what I assume will be Jazz numbers at the La Rev Mexican restaurant in the Junction area.

The 9-11:30 team-ups in the music-friendly room at 2848 Dundas St. W., (adjacent to the east corner at Keele St.) will see Peter on keys along with a different guest horn player each week.  Kicking it off tonight will be a tenor sax player with whom he’s already got an established sympatico: Shawn Nykwist, who regularly appears with him as part of Hubert’s band.

There’s no cover, the room is relaxed and I’m told the food is really tasty —and certainly I can safely guarantee that the music will be.
