Laderoute may not have to switch to acoustic Blues after all | TorontoMoon.ca 180826Su | Shows for Sunday, August 26, 2021

Michael Laderoute & Will Meadows -Gary 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

Whew, it was looking like a near thing there for a while.  Award-winning Roots songwriter Michael Laderoute told me recently, hopefully with his tongue at least somewhat in cheek, that he was considering “getting an old black suit, a vintage Caddy, 2 capos and cheap wine, maybe get a pork pie had and shoot a man in Memphis to add authenticity” in preparation for possibly becoming a Blues player.

The reason was that last month he had to cancel his regular fourth-Sundays show at Tranzac Lounge because of a flaring up of nerve damage in his left hand that left him unable to form even some very basic chords.

The problem, which was basically with one finger on his fingering hand, wouldn’t even allow him to make a C or a G chord.  And even with the versatile and very talented Rob Fenton beside him on resophonic guitar, he felt he couldn’t adequately perform his tunes like “A River I Know,” which, as we’ve mentioned before, won him the Ontario Folk Council’s Songs From The Heart award some time ago.

The situation, which arose from an arthritic condition, was made worse by the fact that he can’t take anti-inflammatory drugs because he’s also on heart medication, he said.  But fortunately, since the cancelation of his July show, during which time he actually did start writing some Blues songs, he told me, things have improved markedly so today, with Rob riding shotgun, he’ll be back in the saddle once more.

There’s no cover for the 3-5 show in the Southern Comfort Lounge in the complex at 292 Brunswick Ave. in the Annex area though there is a donation jar.  So, hey help a near cripple out and toss some coin or folding stuff into the jug if you go, lol.   It’s probably a good idea to check out this act today also because in a couple of months his shows go on hiatus as he heads south on his annual winter migration.

And as the recent medical flare-up and near-Blues experience may serve to remind us all, you just never know which show might be your last chance to see a gifted artist still in his prime.
