Rick & Gailee -PROMO

\ PETERBOROUGH \

It’s always a pleasure to report good news and it appears that there’s something to be happy about at the Black Horse Pub in Peterborough these days.  Because a mainstay veteran performers of “The Electric City,” Rick Young, who seemed in a very precarious way when we wrote about him last November, appears to have rebounded.

It may be overly optimistic to say that Young has been cured of the non-Hodgkin lymphoma which, along with the chemotherapy treatments he was undergoing, took him out of action for several months towards the last half of last year and early months of this one.

But the prognosis for people who’ve had the treatments for the disease are pretty good, with five and ten-year survival rates of 70 and 60 per cent respectively and it’s the sort of thing that may or may not come back but often doesn’t.

‘The Lost Album’ by Rick & Gailie -SLAB Productions

And the fact that Young has returned to performing with longtime partner Gailee in their Rick & Gailee Duo every Monday is definitely a pretty good indication that the lymph glands must be a whole lot better than they were this time last year, given the importance of vocals to their act.

The pair offers a repertoire sure to delight boomers or anyone else who enjoys 60s Pop as they deliver a mix of hits by The Beatles, The Everly Brothers, Moody Blues, Gerry and The Pacemakers, et al —and possibly, if you request one, a few Young originals from his debut disc The Lost Album of compositions that he released just last year.

Apparently they also usually have a lot of musical friends come out to these Monday shows, known as “Crash and Burn” and which, although they’re not listed as such, appear to operate as a kind of open mic night.  The show runs from 7-11 each week at the 352 George St. North venue and there’s no cover.
