Floodgates are opening for live music’s return | TorontoMoon.ca 200807Fr | Shows for Friday, August 07, 2021

It may be still more like a trickle than a flood, but from Hamilton to Oshawa, north from Lake Ontario to cottage country, live music is starting to return to bars and restaurants now in the Stage 3 part of the COVID-19 recovery protocols.

While we only have 11 shows listed today (we’ll be seeking out more in days and nights to come!) they take place in a broad range of communities across the GTA and beyond and also feature a variety of genres.

It appears that constructing a Plexiglass separator between performers and audience, and ensuring the acts aren’t so exciting that people start (GASP!) dancing (or so loud they have to engage in “close talking”) is enough for places to be allowed to bring in performers.

In some cases the shows are also still being streamed live —one happy positive effect of what the pandemic has wrought— and many places that formerly didn’t charge a cover now are doing so to make up for the lower capacities mandated by the physical distancing requirements and other regulations.

Whether patrons will be satisfied with this experience —particularly because of strict rules mandating they remain seated at all times except for bathroom and bill-settling requirement— remains to be seen, of course.

But be it ever so imperfect, seeing the live acts start to get back on stage with audiences actually able to sit and enjoy them in the same room, is surely a welcome development given what we’ve been going through for the past nearly five months.
