James Anthony has gone from Black to Purple in Burlington | TorontoMoon.ca 170204Sa | Shows for Sat. Feb. 04, 2017

James Anthony -Sonny Milne, Facebook

\ BURLINGTON \

When a bruise or wound goes from purple to black it’s not a good sign.  What it means when something goes the other way I don’t know, but Blues/Rockabilly veteran James Anthony may be about to find out.

After a very long-running Saturday afternoon “Blues Sermon” matinee show with weekly special guests at the Black Swan pub in Burlington, as of this week Anthony is moving the show to another local very music-friendly bar, The Purple Heather, in the suburban city nestled in the crotch of Lake Ontario between Oakville and Hamilton.

What the back story is I don’t know, but I also observe that Anthony, who has also appeared at the Swan regularly on Thursday nights for at least a couple of years, not only is no longer on that schedule either (replaced by a DJ it seems) but in fact is now listed on the Purple Heather’s website as hosting a Jazz open mic and jam there for at least the month of February.  And with today’s Sat. matinee being a first for the new host club, it seems the shift is going to be as permanent as anything can be in the volatile music biz.

For his debut today in Purple, located in a giant shopping centre at 3600 Dundas Street (aka Highway #5) at the corner of Walker’s Line northeast of the downtown, Anthony is pulling out all the stops it would seem, having locked in George Olliver as his special guest for the show, which runs 2-6 p.m.

For its part meanwhile, The Swan, which is located quite near to the Heather at 4040 Palladium Way (which runs east off of Walkers Line a little north of Dundas), has not abandoned live music on Saturdays (when it normally features karaoke in the evenings) if this afternoon is any indication.  The club’s website bills a 1-5 p.m. show with a Funk/Jazz/Soul trio known as One Way Up which features Dwayne LaForme on guitar and saxist Mary Kovacs.

As if those two attractions didn’t present enough to fill the appetites of Saturday afternoon music lovers in the area, another long running Saturday matinee series hosted by eclectic Rock/Pop singer and guitarist Sil Simone with an all-star band of veterans (including Garth Vogan on keys!) and also featuring special guests, takes place just a few kilometers to the west at Carrigan Arms, 2025 Upper Middle Road at Guelph Line half-way between #5 and QEW.  For that 2-6 affair today the guest will be another Blues veteran, Bruce Longman.

There’s no cover for any of these shows and if you end up making the journey out there (it sure sounds worth the drive!) on the way back to TO (assuming you don’t stick around to catch the Sat. night bands at the Heather or Arms) you might also want to make a pit stop to visit another longtime favourite Burlington area performer, piano man Michael Keys, who will be going the other way this evening as he appears for a no-cover 9-1 show with vintage Blues/Rock/Pop outfit Ronnie Russell and The Corvairs at Blue Goose Tavern at 1 Blue Goose Way off Royal York Road.

And while you’re in that area, if you still want more Blues you can check out Frank Cosentino’s new Blues Time combo (with Ali Shan on harp) appearing for no cover from 10-close at Southside Johnny’s at 3653 Lake Shore Blvd. near Brown’s Line.

If this Saturday “battle of the giants” schedule keeps going like it is, once the nicer weather arrives I may have to get myself an e-bike with a longer range!
