‘Stir It Up Someday’ album cover

I was happy to see the other day that Relish Bar and Grill in east TO has started to bring musicians back to its stage.

The club, which offers amazing tapas food that now you can actually enjoy while sitting inside the space at 511 Danforth Ave. (as well as via their takeout and delivery options) this weekend had acoustic instrumentalist Gary LaRocca on hand to entertain during the dinner hour.

Yesterday the room also brought back the popular Saturday afternoon matinee featuring Danny Marks and his combo —but unfortunately, while the show was streamed online to enjoy, the room was apparently closed to the public during the performance.

Still missing in action, as well, is the Sunday night Stir It Up jam with hosts David Macmichael and Paul Brennan, about which I’ve written many times, including on the occasion of its tenth anniversary this past February, just before COVID struck.

However, now you can enjoy some of that Sunday Stir It Up spirit from the comfort of your own home —not by streaming a live event or watching a video but by owning a copy of a new whopping 27-track compilation album the club has released.

As the blurb describing the album on bandcamp.com says: “Beauty blooms from the gloomy darkening of East Toronto’s premiere long running weekly open stage.”

Cleverly entitled Stir It Up Someday, the disc is dedicated to the memory of the late Steven David Morrison, who was a staple of the event for many years and whose apparently still mysterious death in June while in the U.S. I wrote about at the time.

All the tracks are live performances recorded  off the floor at the event, so you not only get the awesome music as it happened (with all the surprises live performances at jams often offer) but also catch some of the flavour of being in the room, which is its own very appealing upside of this wonderful event.

In addition to Macmichael and Morrison, some of the performers include Dean McKinnon, Felix & The Cats featuring Robert Pelletier, Tyler Ellis, Sandra Bouza, Julian Taylor and Jace Traz.

Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before this event is back in action live but in the meantime you can stream all of the songs and purchase the album or any of its individual tracks for whatever price you want to pay by visiting its page on Bandcamp.com.
