Pushing the COVID parameters at tiny Sauce | TorontoMoon.ca 200819We | Shows for Wednesday, August 19, 2021

Paul Reddick - GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

I can’t for the life of me see how tiny, hyper-retro period bar Sauce in east TO is going to be able to establish COVID pandemic protocols while still featuring live music in its cheek-by-jowl space at 1376 Danforth Ave.

As I’ve written in the past, this charming but very small room that regularly featured superb live music acts several nights a week (such as Honky-Tonk/Tinpan Alley-style songwriter Julian Fauth) until the virus hit us, makes it difficult for more than a very few people to actually be an audience for the musical performers.  Though quite often the way the Victorian/Goth/bordello salon is set up can lead to those who do crowd around the performance space, which includes a house piano, rubbing elbows with those on stage.

The bar, likewise, is a somewhat hemmed in space and while there’s a patio, it’s also appropriately miniature in size compared to some others nearby —although I suppose with the new city programs allowing them to set up tables on the sidewalk and curbside that aspect will be somewhat improved.

Although an event page on Facebook advertising the show says “strict Stage 3 protocols observed” I simply can’t imagine how patrons and staff will be able to remain two metres apart while being served or using the bathrooms —even without a musical act to cram in.

Nevertheless, tonight the room gets back into the live music scene by bringing in one of its staple acts for two sets, as Juno-winning Blues songwriter Paul Reddick and a trio backing him (Michael Theodore on upright piano, Anna Reddick on double bass and Steve Marriner on guitars) perform at 7 p.m. and at 10. This actually appears to be designed as a weekly series, though no future dates are given on the club’s website.

While normally there’s no cover charge, for this show tickets are being sold, though the promo doesn’t say for how much and I assume each set requires its own ticket.  You can get a ticket and presumably find out more by emailing [email protected].
