Retro 60s Pop shows, such as this Beach Boys tribute act at Linsmore Tavern last year, has proven popular with all ages -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

If you’re of a certain age you’ll remember as a teenager a small handheld device that at the time was a veritable miracle of technology: the transistor radio.

This small invention (about the size of a modern smart phone) was the forerunner of today’s far more sophisticated yet perhaps not ultimately as satisfying “social media” devices.  For back in 1965, AM radio was the original social media for a generation coming of age in years still defined by the fallout from the Second World War and very much adumbrated by the possibility of a very different kind of fallout if the Cold War were ever to go hot.

Huddled under your blankets so your parents would think you were asleep, you might have listened on CHUM-AM or CKOC out of Hamilton to songs like “Happy Together” by The Turtles, “Snoopy vs. The Red Baron”, “Winchester Cathedral” by The New Vaudeville Band, “Secret Agent Man” by Johnny Rivers, “Here Comes Shack” by The Secrets, “I Fought The Law” by Bobby Fuller Four or “Incense & Peppermints” from Strawberry Alarm Clock —in addition, of course, to the many monster hits being released by groups like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles et al.

Many of the tunes that topped the charts in that period were one-hit wonders, yet they still linger in memory and sadly only rarely get played anywhere anymore.

But you might just hear some of those tunes this evening —performed live!— if you check out a retro “bubblegum Pop” show taking place at Black Swan Tavern.

Starting at 7 p.m. in the downstairs lounge at 154 Danforth Ave. near Broadview, Bazooka Joe (old folks will remember the “double bubble” gum of the same name) comes to life as Fernando Curcione and friends recreate some of the hits from the 1964-1968 era when the transistor radio and AM charts were at their peak.

Since I’m not privy to the song list I can’t say what tunes will be included, but certainly Fernado is known for his vast repertoire of musical knowledge and he’ll be accompanied by none other than veteran singer/conga player Robbie Rox as well as bassist Andrew Canning for what is bound to be a lively and hugely entertaining night.

Fernando (aka The Riverdale Kid) and Robbie are longtime friends and musical associates, having met while teens involved in a theatre production of “The Odd Couple” (now is that appropriate or what?) and also having done musical theatre together a couple of decades ago, when they were part of a larger touring troupe that was putting on retro Rock musical revues.

Curcione has also, as I told you about a year ago, been involved for the past several years as the frontman of a Beach Boys tribute act, The Beach Party Boys, that put on an impressive show the night I saw them at Linsmore Tavern last March when they packed the dance floor with a crowd spanning several generations.

Cover for Bazooka Joe and the Double Bubbles is just $5 and I’m told there’s a strong possibility that there will be another long-lost attraction from the mid-60s that many will remember as being part of live music shows: a Go-Go Dancer to accompany the band on stage!  If you aren’t old enough to remember any of this, btw, here’s your chance to get a feel for why the 60s was the best decade ever.
