It’s a ‘Julian Salad’ as Taylor and Fauth both perform with bands tonight

\TORONTO DOWNTOWN / TORONTO EAST\

Now that I’ve come up with the idea of a “Julian Salad” I think maybe I should try to arrange a show somewhere that combines the talents, versatility and variety of genre of both Juno-winning Blues pianoman Julian Fauth and Pop/Reggae/Funk songwriter Julian Taylor on the same bill!

You could actually get a sonic sample what such a musical gourmet dish might be like tonight if you have wheels, because both of these brilliant musical talents will be performing in TO, each with a band they’re at the heart of —and in a time frame that makes it possible to enjoy both artists in one excursion.

Juno winner Fauth (as I told you previously, he copped “Blues Album Of The Year” at the 2009 Junos for his Ramblin’ Son´ album) will appear with his quartet (which probably includes harp and guitar ace and a pretty fair Blues songwriter himself, Ken Yoshioka) at Cameron House, a short block west of Spadina at 408 Queen St. W., for his second consecutive Monday starting at 6 p.m. Normally the early shows at the club only run till about 9, but since the 10 p.m. time slot was still tba at press time, if it stays that way maybe they’ll just pay him to keep on going!

(You can also, I’m very happy to report, now catch Julian in solo mode every Tuesday from 6-9 on the house piano at Sauce in East York. Located at 1376 Danforth Ave. between the Greenwood subway station and Greenwood Ave., this club is small and very cozy and has a nice little patio out front.)

Julian Taylor, who’s been receiving rave reviews (including from me) for the various tracks on his latest Tech Noir album with his Julian Taylor Band, hosts his weekly 8-12 open stage at Dora Keogh, 141 Danforth Ave. near Broadview. Tonight’s feature act at 9:30 is Dora’s Explorers, a jam band he put together comprised of various buddies and Monday regulars and that seems to vary in size and composition from show to show. What remains consistent is the high level of quality of the players and their performances on a very eclectic musical menu.

Taylor’s other group, the JTB, is all about Julian’s originals, which range in style from his early Rootsy soft-Pop material through alt-Pop numbers reflecting his years as leader of his high-charting band Staggered Crossing and his more recent product that ventures into Funk and Dance music while still containing elements of all that he’s done before. I’ll be telling you more about this outfit when we get closer to their upcoming July 23 formal album release at Horseshoe Tavern.

The more I think about it, the more I think I need to organize a Julian Salad night. But why not check out both these shows tonight for yourself —and then let me know whether/where you think such a wild idea would work!
