Pete Cohan & Josh Gordon of The Blazers -GARY 17 pics

\ ETOBICOKE \

I’m glad to see that Markland Pub out in Etobicoke is either continuing or has resumed its rockin’ Blues shows that made the place a Sunday destination for me on many an occasion a dozen or so years ago.

The downside of the rise of social media is that places that aren’t savvy in that realm tend to sort of fall off the radar of many folks who might otherwise want to check them out and the cozy, welcoming Markland, with no website or social media presence that I’ve ever seen (aside from occasional Facebook events for shows like today’s) seems to be in that category.

That’s a shame because, located quite near the border of Etobicoke and Mississauga at 666 Burnamthorpe Rd. a bit west of West Mall, the room has decent grub, friendly staff and regulars and whoever books the music has excellent musical taste.

Today’s act illustrates the musical savvy of patrons and management as a premier Blues act that’s been less active than its fans would like the past few years will be back in action in the room from 4-7:30: The Blazers.

The group, which we most recently told you about last summer when they got back on stage after a hiatus of about 30 months, is fronted by singer Pete Cohan and guitarist Josh Gordon and delivers a kind of high-energy rockin’ Blues that’s well exemplified by the title of their 2010 album of 11 sizzling originals, Red Hot.

The band also includes Chris Craig on drums and Pat McPhail on bass, with the four also being augmented on the album with appearances by multiple-Juno winners Jack de Keyzer, Al Lerman and Alec Fraser among other Blues luminaries.

I’ve previously described their stage show as “firewagon” and you can see for yourself how the urgency of their live act gives rise to the term by checking out a video of the group performing an original tune on the Moon TV page of our website.

Better still, if you get out there this afternoon for their no-cover show you’ll also find lots of food specials and beer prices ($4.50 for domestic bottle, $5.50 for a pint) that will allow you to quench your thirst repeatedly when the place inevitably heats up.
