Multi-talented Fergus Hambleton shines at Beach gem Feathers tonight| TorontoMoon.ca 160507Sa | Shows for Sat., May 07, 2022

Fergus Hambleton -Gary 17

\ TO EAST \

A superlatively talented multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who is a master of diverse genres, Fergus Hambleton is surprisingly laid back and unassuming for a man with so many artistic gifts.

A sax player, singer and co-founder of Juno-winning Reggae band The Sattalites, Hambleton’s pedigree actually goes back to the 60s in Yorkville, when he was a mainstay of the Folk-Rock scene as a member of various bands and when he released two albums in the genre.

After meeting fellow Satallites founder Jo Jo Bennett in the early 1970s, the two eventually teamed up to start the now legendary group, which has released several albums of original material and has copped two Junos. That combo is still heavily in demand for A-list show, yet every Tuesday manages to find time to appear at its longstanding Tuesday night residence at Orbit Room.

He’s also explored Jazz, performing on reeds, winds and guitar with many artists of various styles, and fronts his own group, The Jazz Lovers Society, in that realm.  He’s also released other albums of original material over the years, including, almost exactly a year ago, his latest, Written On The Wind, at a gala show at Hugh’s Room.

Lately we’ve been spotting him in the east-Toronto area, however, where often he’s accompanied by Jazz singer, pianist and songwriter Julie Long, together attending jams at Black Swan and Relish, for example (where he also recently did a showcase) and at these events he melds into the crowd as just one of the gang —until he hits the stage when even though he’s low-key in demeanour his skills stand out.

Tonight I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Long in the audience —and perhaps up on the stage area at some point— when Hambleton is featured at The Feathers Pub in the Upper Beach area.  Like Fergus himself, the musician-owned club (Reid Pickering, songwriter/leader of Country-Pop band The Ditch Horses is the proprietor) maintains a fairly circumspect profile on the local music scene while nevertheless delivering a superb experience.

Feathers, which is really designed to be a darts ‘n’ bitters-friendly authentic English pub, actually only presents live shows one night a week, on Saturdays.  But it more than makes up in quality of talents what it lacks in quantity.  Highly acclaimed songwriter Dan Leask is a regular performer in the cozy, casual spot and recent Saturday songwriter showcases have included artists like Melanie Peterson, Lucas Stagg, Tanya Philopovich and Michael Danckert, to name a few.

This evening’s lineup is a stellar example too: Hambleton is sharing the stage with Don Stevenson (a key songwriting member of legendary U.S. 60s psychedelic Jazz-Rock icons Moby Grape) and guitarist Tim Bovaconti, who has played with more chart-topping stars than you can count on a clear night looking out over the lake.

Tonight’s show in the room at 962 Kingston Road (a few blocks west of Victoria Park) runs 9-12 and amazingly there’s no cover.  But if you like what you hear, do pick up a copy of Ferg’s new disc.
