Birdseye Music Festival putting cancer treatment in the big picture | TorontoMoon.ca 171021Sa | Shows for Sat. October 21, 2021

Birdseye Festival \ TO EAST \

Having a brush with your own mortality is enough to give anyone pause to reflect on what’s important in life, and fem-Rock songwriter, bandleader and indefatigable indie acts promoter Elana Harte is no exception.

For nearly a year the feisty but genial guitarist and singer faced uncertainty in the face of a diagnosis of possible cancer, and during her time taking treatments and recovering, plus waiting to see if the cure worked, also saw her beloved pet pass away.

In addition to all that, as we described last month, during that year she entered into a new relationship and accepted a proposal for marriage, also changing venues for her now bi-weekly M Factor Indie Showcase (and open stage) series (the next one is this coming Wed., October 25) she’s also dedicated some time to helping do her part in the fight against “the big C,” which has ravaged the musical community as much as any other.

That’s the brief outline of the backstory behind this weekend’s two-day Birdseye Music Festival fundraiser for the bladder cancer treatment programs affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was successfully treated.  It includes several performers we’ve written about glowingly in the past and a silent auction and other fundraising activities.

The event takes place today and tomorrow from 4 till close at Eton House Tavern, where for a while she operated the M Factor series before moving it last month to Linsmore Tavern.

Harte will be among the acts performing in the room at 810 Danforth Ave. a block east of Pape station, taking to the big showcase stage at 8:20 p.m. after earlier sets by Jenny Allen, Lilly Mason, Katey Morley & Steve York and Fat Head Hazel and before a set by uproarious art Rockers Jumple at 9:10 to be followed by indie djs.

Tomorrow’s schedule which runs from 4 till 10 or so, is equally impressive, with Sandra Bouza and award winning Blues songwriter Suzie Vinnick among the talent offerings.
