Elana Harte @ Old Nick finale show for M-Factor Mondays 170109 -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

After a momentous summer off-season, songwriter and indie promoter Elana Harte is back with a revamped version of her M-Factor live music series featuring some tweaks to the format including a new night, a new location and addition of an open mic portion.

After leaving long-time home venue Old Nick Pub on Danforth Ave. near Broadview last January following a six year run there for her M-Factor Mondays series, Harte a month later started up M-Factor Redux Thursday nights on the big-stage at Eton House further east near Pape Avenue, which ran till the end of June.

Both of those weekly series followed the formula she’d established twelve years ago when starting up her weekly residencies at a room in Cabbagetown of including a set by herself and members of her Stiletto Flats retro/classic-Rock band along with sets by two featured guest acts.

As of tonight’s debut of the M Factor Indie Music Showcase series, however, the event shifts to alternate Wednesdays and will take place on another powerhouse stage at Linsmore Tavern on Danforth a few steps from the Greenwood subway station.

(There’s no bad blood with Eton House, however —read on further down for the first news about an exciting new event there she’s got planned for next month!)

The Linsmore, after installing functioning house lights a couple of years ago, finally bit the bullet this summer and put in a raised stage next to the window looking onto the street, pretty much signalling its abandonment of attempting to appeal to darts players in favour of enhancing its live music roster, which some weeks has grown to encompass every night of the week.

For Harte the summer was spent in a flurry of ups and downs that included a cancer scare (happily she got the all-clear just a couple of weeks ago), the death of a cherished longtime pet companion and a proposal of marriage which she enthusiastically accepted along with taking a celebratory trip overseas.

Meanwhile, she continues to perform showcase gigs with her band in addition to appearances with the BACA acoustic Rock trio of which she’s one-third; frequent duo shows with Kim Jarrett as Beautiful Salt and as half of the Harte & Mazur twosome with Marianne Mazur; and has also started up a David Bowie tribute band, I Will Be King, that has been getting booked —and rebooked— into some impressive venues.

Not to mention that, in partnership with others, Elana is now in the process of starting the new two-day Birdseye Festival that will be taking place next month at Eton House —the October 21-22 event will be a fundraiser for bladder cancer research and treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Tonight’s kickoff show for the newest incarnation of the M-Factor no-cover series in the room at 1298 Danforth Ave. starts up at 7:30 with a set by Harte et al.

Following that is the feature act: The Soul Maitre D’s, a duo of songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Lawrie Ingles and Henry Lee that has been attracting some notice and getting gigs in disparate rooms because of its versatility and musical depth.

Last but far from least given the talent pool that surrounds Harte and these events, an open mic session kicks in from 10 p.m. till whenever.  Hopefully it doesn’t go too late because I have to wonder:  when does this woman sleep?
