Mary Stewart -promo 2019

\ TO WEST \

It’s been just about a year since Hugh’s Room Live announced that it had hired a new club manager, namely one experienced bar/bistro server/manger Mary Stewart, as we told you last April.

But regular readers of TorontoMoon.ca over the past several years will know her better as an enchanting and thoughtful songwriter with an ebulliently entertaining stage presence, about which talents we’ve written on several prior occasions, including one when she released her Chances Are album back in 2013.

Some may think a transition into running a prestigious music club might mark the end of a young person’s creative endeavours as they “grow up” and join the adult world.  I remember being in one bar when the fun-loving manager got scolded by the owners for getting out and grooving on the dance floor, being told in no uncertain terms that “Management Can’t Dance!” (and subsequently inspiring my song of that title).  Anyone who makes such an assumption about Mary Stewart clearly doesn’t understand the depths of passion and creativity contained in this diminutive but dazzlingly daring East Coast émigré.

Thus it is that tonight Mary takes off the bowtie (I have no idea if she actually wears one while being a manager, but the image seems somehow to suit her quirky and fetching fashion sensibility) to take to the stage at Hugh’s as opening act for an album release show by songwriter Steven Bowers.

At just $20, cover for the 8:30-11 show is quite modest compared to that for most of the better known talents who appear in the concert room/restaurant at 2261 Dundas St. West.  And I can guarantee you’ll feel you’ve gotten more than your money’s worth from the opening act alone.
