Sax man Baumann & bassist McManus of Junction City All-Stars -GARY 17

With no fewer than five music festivals going on today in the part of TO west of Bathurst Street and four of them one-day affairs happening on outside street stages, a lot of people are hoping that the weather forecasters are correct when they predict the overnight rain will ease around noon.

One of the five festivals is the final two shows of the Lulaworld Festival to wrap 11 days of World music shows at Lula Lounge on Dundas St. West a couple of blocks west of Dufferin Street. It’s the only one for which cover charges are in effect from what I’ve been able to discern.

Another, the Open Tuning Festival, is spread out in nearly 20 locations, most outdoor, across a quadrant bordered by Bathurst and Christie Streets north of Bloor to Dupont Street.  It features a variety of music styles and artists between noon and 11 p.m. and it’s described as a free festival.

Not far away from both those events, the 11:30 a.m. till 9 p.m. Dundas West Fest involves five street locations along Dundas St. West between Ossington and Lansdowne Avenue.  Clubs in this currently trendy area, such as Dakota Tavern, The Painted Lady and The Garrison, also have shows scheduled in conjunction with it, though these will probably have cover charges. There are some real heavy hitters among the free acts outside though, including The Royal Crowns, The Dears, The Shuffle Demons and Run With The Kittens.

Just a short streetcar ride or leisurely walk further west, the entire length of Roncesvalles Avenue will be alive with live music both outside and in some of the very happening bars along the strip as Roncy Rocks 2016 takes over the area from 10 a.m. till 8 in the evening.

In addition to the free outdoors shows with features like Michael Keith, David Celia, Chris Staig and The Monkey Bunch, both Gate 403 and The Local across the street from it are getting in on the act with special shows in place.

At Gate 403 Bill Heffernan’s weekly 5-8 show (which only has a couple of weeks after this before its summer break) today welcomes the Junction City All-Stars featuring Dave McManus, Julian Fauth and George Baumann along with Howard Willett’s Roots & Branches duo for what should be a spectacular musical occasion as Heffernan is also expected to join in.  The vibe continues afterwards into the wee hours as Fauth heads up a Blues combo that takes over at 9 p.m. There’s no set cover at this club but you’re expected to put something in the jar or bucket for the talent.

Across the street The Local has three shows today instead of its usual two —there’s a set of French songs from 1-3, songwriter Steve Gleason doing Country-Roots from 4-6 and from 9 ‘til whenever the band Redsteps performs.

If you’ve a yen for more open feeling spaces Etobicoke has plenty of those and in addition to proximity to the cooling effect of Lake Ontario and a big sky overhead, the strip of Lake Shore Blvd. between 25th and 32nd Streets (3241-3569 Lake Shore) will be presenting the Long Branch Fest with six outdoor stages featuring some fine talents between noon and 6 p.m. along with a street sale and family-oriented activities.

There are four sets with acts rotating from place to place after each performance and we can tell you that message-Folk-Pop songwriter Harpin’ Norm Lucien (with Kevin Jeffrey and Nicole Coward accompanying him) performs from noon-3, as does Pop songwriter Carmen Toth, while grizzled-Roots writer Roger Zuraw and Coward are each on from 3-6.

After things wrap at this event at 6, you’ll be close enough and still in time to catch sensational Penny Skolski on stage at Southside Johnny’s (3653 Lake Shore Blvd. W. —at the corner of 36th street) with veteran R&B/Blues band The Essentials for their weekly 5-8 show.  Afterwards Rock group Driver takes to the stage around 10 and there’s never a cover at this club and it has great wings and other menu items.

All in all, it’s a hell of a good day to head west!
