Kirsten brings in her trio to do battle with the beast at Richtree

\ TORONTO DOWNTOWN \

Anyone who’s a woman themselves or cares about a woman in their life (I’m pretty sure this includes 99.5% or better of the population) agrees that one of the most horrendous scourges of modern times is the rampant spread of breast cancer.

Perhaps it’s simply because modern women live so much longer than their counterparts from previous eras, perhaps it’s due to the toxins those of us in the industrialized world keep spewing into the air and water and inject into our foods or perhaps it’s simply the gods’ way of telling us something’s wrong with our way of life.

No matter the causes, what everyone hopes for is a magic cure. While that may not exist (or if it does or did we probably already have or will soon make extinct whatever species of flora or fauna would produce it naturally) the more research that is done into this modern plague, and the more that can be done to develop treatments to either arrest or eliminate the monster once it’s detected, the better.

Men can get breast cancer too, of course, but women are 100 times more likely to and it is the second-leading cause of death among women in Canada. According to the cancer.ca website, an average of 14 Canadian women every day die of breast cancer and 67 are newly diagnosed with it. Other stats on the page paint a disturbing picture of what the future may hold if the trend doesn’t change.

Researching and developing effective treatments, of course, takes money and thus we have an endless stream of ongoing fundraisers to direct dollars towards the cause, including this evening’s 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. show by Kirsten Jones at Richtree Market Restaurants in the Eaton Centre mall near the Queen Street West entrance.

As I told you previously, Kirsten, an award winning Country/Pop songwriter and soulful acoustic covers artist, is there solo every Thursday, but tonight she’ll be joined by members of her band as a trio.  Mitch Grio brings in his bass and Kevin Neal will provide pedal steel accompaniment for a “tribute to 80s music” themed fundraising show.

There’s no cover but apparently Richtree is donating 100% of the money received in sales for this three-hour period to breast cancer research. That means you can check out one or more of the eleven unique eateries under the Richview umbrella and accomplish something good at the same time, and I’m told there will be drink specials too.
