The David Love Band -Gary 17

\ ETOBICOKE \

Since making its debut at Timothy’s Pub in January of last year, delightful 60s Pop Rock trio The David Love Band has established itself firmly in the well-respected club’s musical roster, since then appearing about every other month for a Friday or Saturday night show.

Now it appears the group, which specializes in melodic Pop from acts that were the “toppermost of the poppermost” in the golden era of radio music (Beatles, Animals, Kinks, et al) is also going to be part of the room’s Sunday afternoon rotation.  They did one of the 5-9 Sunday gigs in the room at 344 Brown’s Line, a little south of Horner Ave., in March and return again tonight.

Despite huge guitar cred spanning four decades with various A-list units like The Carpet Frogs band, Classic Albums Live troupe and backing folks like Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman in their projects, eponymous David Love plays bass (and sings, of course) in this group.  Super-versatile Darrell McNeill handles 6-string duties and power skins-beater Kevin Mulligan is on the kit, with all three singing on some harmony-laden tunes.

I’ve seen how this small but mighty unit transforms a workaday bar into an instant love-fest through authentically recreating the magic for those who remember the halcyon heyday of Pop (they rarely perform anything recorded later than 1969) and blowing the minds of those who can only wish they had been alive back then.  Like the songs they so convincingly deliver, this show never gets old.

Although most nights there’s a cover for the live music at Timothy’s I’m not sure about the Sunday show —but if there is, it won’t be more than $5.  Regulars rave about the food here, there’s a patio that should be open to please fresh-air fiends and if you’re still in the mood for some good music after the gig, the weekly jam at Southside Johnny’s nearby begins around 10 p.m.
