Sil Simone -MARY ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG

\ ETOBICOKE \

It was probably inevitable that Timothy’s Pub would eventually complete the circle: for many years it offered live entertainment Thursday through Sundays (with two shows Saturdays!) then a few years ago added Wednesdays, last year Tuesdays and now, starting tonight, a full 7-nights-a-week of live music as Sil Simone and a combo of veteran players debuts a new Monday evening weekly series.

It’s interesting to see the “jousting” —whether intentional or not— between this welcoming little room at 344 Brown’s Line in the Alderwood area of Etobicoke and two other well established rooms in nearby Port Credit:  Roc’n Doc’s and The Shore Grill (offspring/successor of the late great pub The Harp run by the same owner).

With Roc ‘n’ Doc’s in particular going through sort of an unsettled phase during the past year, juggling its Monday through Wednesday line-ups incessantly in what seems to be a bid to find something that works consistently, Timothy’s appears to be the room of choice for acts that find themselves suddenly unemployed there on a weekly basis.  To wit: when the club cancelled the long-running Phil & John shows they moved, for a while before landing at The Shore on Wednesdays, to Timothy’s.  Similarly, the band Groovestone was a regular feature at Roc’n Doc’s on Tuesdays for some time until just over a year ago, when Timothy’s scooped them up for the new weekly Tuesday show that celebrated its first anniversary last week.

Now Simone, who had been appearing at Doc’s fairly regularly as a Monday night feature along with musician/club booker Joe Rebello (aka Rebel Joe or Rebelljo), will be anchoring the new 8-12 event, fronting a combo that also includes Ahmed Mitchell, Matt Horner on drums, and Calvin Beale on bass.  You can count on a superior musical product from this outfit since Simone, as I’ve told you previously —ironically in announcing just a couple of months ago that he’d be the regular attraction Mondays at Roc’n Doc’s—  is a guarantee of excellence any time he takes to the stage.

Whether or not it’s a runaway success right off the hop, you can be sure of one thing at this room: the show will get a good chance to prove itself, as owner Tim Brem is a savvy operator who has his eye on the long-term and has a solid reputation among players for being fair.
