150808Sa Saturday, August 08, 2021\ TO WEST \

For the past four evenings and for one more tonight, Hugh’s Room in west TO is hosting a five-part series presented by Jazz.FM radio station that offers glimpses into how other cultures have interpreted the genre. There have been nights focusing on innovative fusions from Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, France and Iceland —an adventurous exploration indeed!

Tonight’s finale is billed as the World Influences show and there’s no better way than that to describe the incomparable, hypnotically eclectic and both affirmational and subversive music produced by the showcase act: Lenka Lichtenberg with her band Fray.

You can hear and see a sample of what to expect from this iconoclastic yet embracing Jewish artist in a video that resides on the Moon website as part of an article describing her collaboration with Iraqi Folk-Jazz artist Raoul Said. The unique product of their co-composing, Bridges, is music that blends themes from Yiddish and Iraqi music in dialogue and fusion and perhaps illustrates, as the title of their work suggests, that there is no human gulf that music cannot overcome and encompass.

Indeed the Polish expatriate, who has also achieved some renown as a member of the highly regarded Sisters of Sheynville 6-piece Klezmer/Swing Jazz band has made a career out of combining disparate —and some might assume hostile— musical forms together. As we told you in April of 2013 prior to release of a new album at Glenn Gould Theatre, she previously in her own work also blended European with South American and Jewish with Arabian music.

Attending the 8 p.m. concert in the room at 2261 Dundas St. W. will set you back $42 but I predict that if you have taken the time to listen to her product on the Moon post or her own website you will agree this is a huge bargain. I would imagine she will also have copies of at least some of her five albums on hand, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself shelling out extra for one or more of them after experiencing the show live.
