Pleasant Rose is latest attempt to revive that ol’ Chick ’n’ Deli magic | TorontoMoon.ca 181012Fr | Shows for Friday, October 12, 2021

\ TO Central-Midtown \

It’s been a rocky road for the last few operators of the room at 744 Mount Pleasant Ave. in uptown TO, which of course for decades was known as the Chick ‘n’ Deli bar and eatery, home of famous chicken wings (though not as tasty as advertised in my experience) and great live music.  Not to mention single ladies and guys looking to get laid pretty much every night of the week.

It was a winning formula for a long time but eventually new, arrogant owners let it slide and it closed.  Reopening under subsequent owners trumpeting different names (The People’s Chicken, then Club Seven44) didn’t do much to improve things really, though some of the old Jazz, R&B and vintage Rock bands that had helped make the place a landmark did return for various periods of time.

Finally, as we told you at the time, the place closed yet again in May of last year and it seemed likely the property was ripe for redevelopment as yet another condo site.  But lo and behold yet another new owner is giving the old formula another go, this time under the name Mt. Pleasant Rose.

I can’t tell you much more than that at the moment, except that tonight the room features a hot Blues-Rock band we’ve written about a few times previously:  The James Green Electric, fronted by the eponymous James Green, former founding member guitarist of Blushing Brides.

Presumably the impressive stage and sound system are still intact but it could be interesting to see what, if any, changes have been made to update the décor in the rest of the sprawling room a little south of Eglington Ave. East, which also has a pretty pleasant two-sectioned front patio when the weather’s nice.  There’s no cover, I’m presuming, and the music gets underway at 9.
